MSSE or Avast

Yeah what's the best in terms of security and being less of a system hog, if you have used both please let me know your thoughts.

Up until very recently I used MSE on my desktop and laptop, but I have just switched to avast. The reason being was that MSE couldn't remove a trojan that I managed to acquire, even though it could detect it.

I decided to not take any chances and restore an old image of my c drive, so I couldn't tell you whether avast could have done a better job but I fancied a change regardless.

So far I'd say avast seems to be much less of a resource hog. It starts up faster than MSE, uses less ram and can do a full scan in about half the time. However, MSE's UI seems to be much more slick, with less intrusive features (seriously why do I want to hear that avast is updated? Just do it!) Most of the rubbish can be turned off but it is still annoying regardless.

I'd try both personally and see which you prefer :)

I have used Avast for a number of years on various rigs as I've found it to be very effective and light on system resources at the same time.

MSE all the way.

We've got the networked edition of Avast at work and it's shockingly bad. We had a variant of the conficker virus, which it detected but still let it infect the entire network. We're waiting for our license to expire before reviewing other options.

MSE. I never thought I'd use an anti-virus software again after Norton (I've been without one for years, doing scans with free software from time to time and never finding anything) but MSE is a whole different story. It's like it's not even there most of the time.

Avast!

MSE is bloatware, it scans all exe's and stops some programs that are totally legit from running.

Avast have used it for years and it's still the best, (tried plenty of others including MSE)

So Avast gets my vote

This. Just plain confuses me that most people think MSE is lightweight. While in fact it is shockingly aggressive with executable scanning (literally EVERYTHING, running or not, that is so much as accessed), incredibly slow at scanning and a huge CPU drain.

MSE does seem quite 'heavy'. Its realtime scanning module is currently using 70MB of RAM, which I consider a little excessive. But in the days of quad-core CPUs and many gigabytes of RAM, it probably doesn't matter very much...

I've just moved to Avast from MSE on my 'not so high spec' Dell D630 laptop and I wont be going back.

MSE is so resource intensive it beggers belief, its also very very slow at scanning.

Simply updating definitions takes what feels like an age, sometimes upto 15mins to complete on my laptop. Avast takes about 10 secs.

Using Avast. V6 client is very nice, and configurable. As for the memory usage, its only using 26mb of RAM and my PC has been just as responsive as without it.

MSE was ok, but I found it used a lot more RAM

Can anyone tell me if Avast can be configured to be more-or-less invisible? The last time I tried it, it irritated me with its constant pop-ups about definition updates, etc.
