match make gamers by hardware

You'd just get people running a program to artificially slowdown their PC to get matched into lower hardware spec brackets, then disabling it and "pwning noobs".

Besides the best quake 3 player I've ever played against (and having played against the likes of hell.uk, fata1ty, zoltar, etc. I know a good player when I run into one :D) was running 640x480 on a rubbish old CRT barely getting much over 20fps with a rubbish old basic mouse.

You sure he was telling the truth about that Rroff? ;)

A lot of pros used to play at 640x480 to get the 150+Hz on CRTs so in some ways thats not such a disadvantage (tho I doubt his monitor even did 85Hz at that res).

This thread reminds me of the fuss some people made when Eyefinity first came out. Some single-monitor people got REALLY steamed that games should be designed to automatically disable multi-monitor gaming on multiplayer because it wasn't fair.

As the others have said, if your PC is holding you back, upgrade or learn to play better. If you want a level playing field hardware-wise, the console aisle can be found in any supermarket or high street.

To be fair, I think all games should only match me against people that are obviously worse than me so I can stroke my own ego. I mean I'm great right, so why can people beat me?

Seriously though, getting your arse handed to you on occasion is part of the process. Playing any game in godmode is dull as all hell. Getting beat stops things getting boring and points out weak spots in your game which you should learn from.

I remember years ago back in old school cs 1.6, I had a friend who was regarded as one of the best players in the world, especially in anything KA related. He happened to be my next door neighbour, and I'd watch him trash gangs of highly regarded clan owners into nothing, using a mushy sticky keyboard, onboard graphics and a crappy dell mouse that jumped constantly.

If you want to make the game more fair for yourself, practice.

Consoles are hardly fair hardware-wise either, seeing as you can get those cheating controllers these days.

Yep, quite a lot of people still do even now (though low res now being like 1064x768 or whatever). Lots of pros turn all the graphical options down too, not just for higher FPS, but to be less distracted by unimportant details.

Yup I still turn down all the settings in QuakeLive, COD4/MW2 and Black Ops tho I've stopped playing Black Ops coz its crap.

Why should anyone be limited to horrible looking and or performing games like on Console when they have the money for silly hardware, GTX 590's/ 580's etc You get what you pay for. More you pay, better you get.

The people who develop this will be upset when they see all the time and effort wasted when it becomes apparent some people are just better than others.
