Overreaction or a genuine cause for concern?

Was visiting my parents tonight, they told me that about 5 weeks ago when Scotland was enjoying some better weather that they were outside sunbathing.

Their garden is a communal garden which looks onto a rectangle smallish field.

Anyway this guy turns up in the field with a little boy of about 8, the man has with him some serious photography equipment, huge lense, light reflector and an external light source.

The kid has a ball but that gets left to the side, at first the man didn't notice my parents and got the boy to stand behind a large hedge. The guy then takes photo's of the kid with this huge lense and getting the boy to pose with his hands up to his mouth. This went on for 10 mins or so, at which point the guy notices my parents but then continues. For another 20 mins he made the boy stand in the exact same pose, in the exact same location.

This made my parents feel very uncomfortable so my Dad confronted the guy and asked what he was doing and if the boy was his son. Apparently he didn't say much and just confirmed it was his son and continued to take photo's with the boy posing exactly the same, hands to his face, no movment and same place, against a tall hedge. So my dad told him again that he wasn't happy and felt something wasn't right. The guy didn't speak back or explain anything but a few minutes later he left.

My mum took a photo of the guy and it bothered them so much that my dad went to the local police station in the morning to report what he had seen and gave them the picture.

I kind of had a laugh about it with them, asking if they were sure they were not getting into a frenzy due to the media etc but to be fair it does sound a little weird.

So are my parents raving mad Daily Mail lunatics or was there a genuine cause for concern here?

A photograph taking a pic of his son.

Trouble is media has made such a frenzy you can't do anything normal without attracting suspicion.

I do kind of agree with you but my dad has been into photography himself since he was 16 or something. It didn't feel normal to him. No change in posture, no change in location which was just a gloomy looking green hedge anyway. Not like there was some fantastic scenery in the background. So I can see why he felt it was very strange.

Sounds like the kinda thing Ive seen with guys that work a lot to get good Stock images, kinda a normal practise for them.

The guys mistake tho not just having a chat with you dad and telling him about it, what ever his reasons where, im guessing pedos like to keep a lower profile than walking about with what sounds like expensive photo equipment.

Agreed with this.

Could have been anything - getting some stock photos, playing with light, or specific promo headshots etc. for his son.

Sounds like a photographer just out playing. I would wager most paedos aren't out sporting semi-pro cameras and external light sources etc. in public.

Does sound pretty weird, not up for explaining wtf he was doing makes it weirder... who knows, you should prolly post a pic of the dude for us to decide though! lol :P

Tell your parents to mind their own ****ing business.

I think that's a little harsh. It's one of those things you really need to see it to judge it. I know you don't judge books by their cover etc. However, if he was old, fat with a beard and glasses. You would probably assume he was indeed a "pedo"

I would probably have wandered over and made conversation, told him I was into photography (which I am) and asked what he was upto, plans etc. Then judged it on his response. If he started talking about exposure and contrast then introduced you to little Mikey who was all smiles and laughter, you would safely assume it was normal.

If however, he was very cagey and didn't want to interact and little Mikey looked rather frightened. I would probably have phoned the police and reported my concerns.

The same pose for so long is definitely weird. Maybe just a **** photographer?

Weird one. So many freakshows out there these days. I think it's wrong to ignore these things. Although it's also equally wise not to jump to conclusions all the time.

And you are assuming you know what they want the photos for and it's just a keep sake. Unlikely to be that. As said stock photos or any other number of reasons.

OMG he had professional camera gear?! What a ****

Don't you know only paedos buy telephoto lenses or DSLRs.

Wait... ****
