Hey guys. The postie just came and I have a bit of a quandry. There was a small envelope with obviously a name and address on. The name its addressed for is near enough mine, the address it was supposed to be sent to is mine (although one line is wrong, the 4 other lines are correct). So whats the problem I hear you ask?

Inside there's a a postcard with a message on it and a cheque for a substantial sum of money. Now after a bit of googleing the cheque is from a very wealthy public figure in London. So what would you do?

Cash it? Get in touch with them?

Whats the worst that could happen if i take it to the bank?! Help!

Is the cheque for you

I assume not, so how do you intend to pay it in to your bank...

Has my name on it, just confused

Pictures please, blank out the important stuff.

Just editing now

if it is all addressed to you and the cheque has YOUR name on it cash it in. what was the sum of money may i ask ?

£3.5k. Granted, not a lot to some. But to just randomly turn up is odd.....

I'd contact him.

look at it this may it may b a test for a larger sum :p

Or more likely some sort of scam.

I would definitely get in contact with him - Who knows, if it's a wealthy well-known individual, he may reward you :p

Cheques do not fall under the same rules as "unsolicited goods".
Remember a bank error - you spend the "error" and you can be charged with theft.
If you are not owed this money then cashing it and spending it would amount to theft.
£3.5k is no "pocket change" and it will eventually be found.

If it's legitimately yours, then a quick phone call or return letter won't hurt.
You've got 6 months to pay the cheque in, so a little due-diligence first won't hurt.

If you're not expecting money then you contact the person tbh. Not that i am against you having the money, it's just things of this nature often turn around when you're not looking and **** you up the arse.

I got a card with a tenner in this morning, that was addressed to me but I can't fathom who sent it to me. It wasn't signed... Just said "congratulations" on it...

Isn't a tardy book for when you're late? You have to sign it or something. Can't figure out the relevance of that here. Unless it's your severance package ;).

I'm with Stoofa on this. Find out first of all, you never know it could be a mistake and the guy could love you for your honesty and tell you to keep it anyway.

...if only.....
