Noticed today that the GS in Oxford has been completed shut down. No warnings, no messages just 1 day of gutting the place and today everything is completely locked up and empty.

Not surprised as they are owned by the Game group who are struggling but the lack of any message is puzzling....any other stores shut recently?

anyhow just an observation, and dont be surprised if a store gets closed near you. get those inflated priced games whilst you can :)

yeah, My local one shut around 6 months ago. There is another in town but thats closed its top floor and doesnt even do pc games anymore. been very downscaled. As you said its owned by game and they dont seem to be doing so well.

Isnt there a Game in the Westgate centre about 5 shops down still? Probably not surprising they shut one of the shops down if so.

We have 4 video game stores (all owned by Game) within 150 yards of each other or so in my town - 1 was the original Game store the other 3 aquisitions i.e. Electronics Boutique or whatever it was called, I hear they will be closing 2 of them soon.

It was eletronics boutique that bought game over and started trading under that name im sure. Game and HMV will be closing a few stores. If i need to get a console game these days asda is usually cheaper on release a lot of the time so supermarkets are probably having quite an impact

A shame but businesses like HMV, Waterstones and Game deserve to go under the way they operate. I understand the business realities of why they might charge more if you walked into a shop but they should understand the realities of competing against online retailers who are cheaper and deliver on release day. Especially when they're competing against themselves price wise online vs retail. Why they dont offer the same facility that Currys/Comet/Halfords/Toys R Us/PC World do by offering the same price in store as online if you reserve it online. That way they'd get footfall through the door might make additional sales......they are arsehats and deserve to go the way of the dinosaur.

Sorry rant over, just remember hearing some guy from HMV on the radio or tv bleating on about not being able to compete against online and it narked me off as they have some flexibility to improve the issue themselves.

Totally agree with you.
They need to start charging the same price in store as online BUT they also need to start putting competitive prices online. Game is always far more expensive than places like shopto.net.
HMV are just as bad. I used to work with a bloke who saw something on the HMV website so went into a store to get it but it was £10 more. He said he just argued til they gave him it a the online price.

They're digging their own grave tbh.

Do I

A) Order Online

- 99% of the time cheaper
- Game on release, or day before
- No time or money spent travellnig to a highstreet store or supermarket.

B) Buy from a High Street Store or Supermarket.
- Instore price will most likely be more expensive, probably by £5-10
- Spend time and money travelling to and from the store/supermarket, whether it's petrol or public transport fares.

B will always win for new releases, unless the price instore is lower, which is very unlikely.

In Wolverhampton we have 2 GAME stores, and a GameStation, within a 1-2 minutes walk of each other. It seems so pointless.

couple of game's have shut down in my area but the gamestations still going, most places had 2 stores in the same shopping centre, pretty pointless.

The best bit of the Gamestations I've been into in the past was always their stock of retro stuff. Old GBA games, Gamecube games - even as far back as N64 stuff.

Sure, it was owned by Game, but they kept their own unique identity. :(

I know that they're owned by GAME, but I always prefer using Gamestation. The staff are normally a lot better, not as pushy as GAME, and their reward system is better too. It would be a shame if my local one went, I use them quite a bit. Never for day one purchases, that's always done online, but if I fancy an older game they're normally quite competetive. They also never try to push used stock on you, unlike how GAME do in my experiance, which is the biggest reason I stopped using them.

Gamestation in Cardiff are closing down, had a letter from them a few days ago.

It is as someone else said, GAME bought out Gamestation and many of the stores are so close to each other.

i mean seriously how did they even afford to keep 3 stores in one town, in guildford game had 2 stores and one in debenhams, I think one was an EB acquisition so it makes sense that now game pretty much own all the high street game stores they will start closing them.

Anyone who the hell pays £42.99 for a new release from them anyway

There are two GAMEs and a Gamestation in probably a 5 minute walk from each other. All of them are in their own of 3 shopping centers in the Hull city center. Seems quite pointless.

At least the Gamestation has a few 360 with some demos on to have a fun game of FIFA at lunch.
