Can I put a 7900GT in my PC without the power cable?

Hi there,

I currently have a 7300 LE in my Dell PC that I inherited from my sister. I've started to get back into BF2 a little and I found my old 7900GTX in my cupboard.

Now I had a little look inside and there is no 6 pin cable to plug into the back of the card. My question is that will it be ok to use the card without that 6 pin cable?

Most likely either the GPU won't power up when the PC tries to boot or will boot but in Windows you will get a low power error and the drivers won't allow proper 3D mode to be used.

you might find that the PSU is not up to the job of powering that card though. typically in OEM PC's you get the cheapest and nastiest PSU that will power the computer without going bang

To be honest Dell's power units are quite decent, They just lack connections.

I run a 7950gt without power cable. Works fine but i get a message telling me performance reduced due to lack of power...only use for desktop stuff anyway

Drivers should prevent it - but be careful in 3D stuff it can draw too much power through the PCI-e/AGP port and do nasty things to your motherboard (not a problem if you only do desktop stuff tho).

As did my 9800gt, just didn't get and 3d acceleration until I plugged the power cable in
