BT Infinity & FTTx Discussion

Just spoken to someone from BT about my BFBC2 server borwser issues.

He thinks that my BFBC2 traffic is being interpreted as encrypted p2p traffic and thats why im having issues.

No solution as of yet, but he is going to let me know.

I also mentioned to him the flash issue, and he cant explain it. He even tested it him self and saw the same thing.

At least someone at BT has experienced it now.

Hopefully my line is now sorted.

Changing the modem and things seem far happier.

Regarding the flash player downloads, I'v just test it now at 12.19pm and it works as it should.

Il test it again dring traffic managed hours, but I think its a traffic management thing gone awry.

Good to hear it. :)

Dont go unplugging it now. :p

It's the reason why I will avoid any ISP that uses traffic shaping. These issues will always exist, especially with new games.

However, withthe bad news that the DEA act stands which the final appeal wasthrown out yesterday, all ISP's are going to be forced to go down this route, or face the consequences them selves for allowing their customers to use p2p.

Some of us get less than 2Mb/s. At least you can stream the majority of 720p!

I should be getting FTTC next month. :p

My 6mb ADSL lin can download from usnet at full speed. I go to the BBCs site and cant stream a tiny video from a news story as it cant keep up. Just found out that I should be getting Infinity in my street in December after previously being told (by the website) that my exchange was being done but not my area. Virgin have also done my exchange but not my area.

Really hope Infinity comes here. If only BT had laid fibre decades ago when the cable operators were doing it. Imagine where we might be!

Not at all. Traffic shaping stops consumers using a ton of bandwidth. It has nothing to do with stopping "illegal" traffic.

Something is wrong. It sounds like you're suffering from congestion.

Decided to switch to BT Infinity from O2 (on 30 day notice contract). Got my MAC key within an hour but was told over the phone and in an email if I use it within 7 days I get charged by o2 £15. I was told this was because if I use it within the "notice period" they get charged and then pass it on to the customer. Cheek !

Funny thing was I have heard others switching from O2 to say Sky have been offered 6 months free but when I told them I was going to BT Infinity I got no offers.

He was a right glum operator too.

Quick question regarding the option 2 package for 40GB. Is there a off peak and on peak usage? My landlord is getting the option 2 40GB tariff but i want to know if this is only for on-peak usage e.g. offpeak unlimited.

yeah but I have pills for that.

The annoying thing is that at any given time where normal web stuff can get a bit sloppy my usenet download rate is practically unchanged.

Hello all,

Can you guys please tell me what the pings are like with the unlimited package and do you get throttled at certain times? FTTC has arrived in my area an i'm thinking about joining the rest of the cool kids and signing up. did the speed test on bt and says i can get around 35mb/7.5mb.

Currently with BE and after 3 years of great service downloading at 2.1mb/s all of a sudden now ive lost nearly 8mb/s downloading at 1.18mb/s they've been monitoring my line but that is all they are seem to be doing about it. fancy a change.

cheers

For the first 10 days pings are identical to Be*, after 10 days they turn on interleaved mode and they won't turn it off after that, so pings shoot up again, but they aren't too bad.

There is peak time throttling on p2p but there are workarounds to that (VPN's)

If you can still get 1.18 mb/s I would stay with Be* as they excel quite far in terms of pings/stability/customer service. I switched from Be* to BT Infinity mainly because my line was only capable of 5meg on ADSL2+ and that was nowhere near fast as I wanted as I download large linux iso's ( :D ) so wanted the faster speeds.

Personally I'd stay put if you're getting 1mb/s+ speeds still, unless you really need the extra 3mb/s in speed.

I know I'll be cancelling my 18 month contract with BT at the end and hopefully Be* are offering FTTC services by then :)

Be* will be dead in 18months, they are losing customers at a stupid rate and seem to be doing nothing about it.

Unless I've missed some news on them..

Iv just noticed auto negotiation on the local ethernet on my computer has me at 10mbps......

Setting it to 100 full duplex of 1000 full duplex doesnt give me a connection.

Questions:

1. Does does the home hub support gigabit speeds?

2. Can you have multiple devices connected via ethernet a different speeds?

Say 2 at 100mbps and one at 1000?

This computer is connected tothe home hub 3 via a gigabyte ether cable, but setting to 100 or 1000 mbps full duplex it is not connecting, only 10mbps....

Do you think if I set the speeds on the local ethernet connections, and then restart the hub, it will connect?

Edit*

Ok Iv just found here that the hub has 1 gigabyte port and 3 100mbps ports, but it still doesnt explain why I can synch to the hub at 100mbps full duplex and only 10mbps works...

Homehub has 1 gigabit port the other 3 are 100meg (stupid idea), you can have different speeds.

If its auto setting 10meg maybe dodgy cable?

Be are looking to reconnect me at my exchange within next 24hrs, hopefully that sorts it.

Cheers dude, not sure what to do then, I have been happy with Be but losing nearly 8mb sucks :/

*EDIT* I am interested in VPN's for American sport etc, what VPN firm are you with? Just out of curiosity :)

Can you give me more info on this? Have they changed their ports or something? I remember being with Bulldog/Pipex about 4-5 years ago and they went to hell when Tiscali got their filthy hands on them and installed their horrible (Iron Ports).
