I'm hoping to take the girlfriend to Lake Garda for our summer hollybobs. Has anyone been? Any recommendations on hotels or towns to stay in? We'll be flying into Verona and making our own way there, as it seems fairly easy! :)

The north end of the lake is much much nicer than the overdeveloped and overcrowded south. I had a very pleasant stay at Hotel Val Di Sogno (Tripadvisor). The towns of Malcesine, Riva and Limone were lovely and there's a great walk up from Torri to Albisano. Hire car is definitely the best way to get around, but watch out for traffic driving up from Verona.

Riva and Limone are both quite nice - we stayed in Gardone Riviera due to lack of availability at the time and I wasn't overly keen on it.

To be honest I preferred Lake Como (and Como itself) by a fair margin I have to say.

overdeveloped and overcrowded south

I wouldn't say it's over-developed or crowded. There are more fun things to do in the southern area. Wherever you stay, there are river buses that take you to other parts of the lake if you don't have a car.
