Hello All

Long time lurker first time poster here.

I am looking a building a new rig; I have had desktops about five years ago but switched to laptops due the portability but now looking to resort back to a desktop.

I am at university and a geographer and the GIS software and Data Analysis programs were melting my laptop, so this is the reason for resorting back to a desktop plus the ability to play games quite frequently.

After a fair amount of research I have decided to run an i5 2500k due to is overclockability. What I am struggling with is deciding on is motherboard and graphics card although all help would be appreciated.

The case, PSU, fans, optical drive and hard drives will be bought first and then the motherboard, RAM, graphics card and processor shortly (within the month).

Ram: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-299-CS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=

Processor: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-360-IN

Graphics Card: Not sure

Any help would be greatly appreciated

If your only getting a 30GB SSD, a Z68 board may be of interest to you for Intel's Smart Response Technology, which uses an SSD drive as a cache to speed up access times to your most commonly used files.

Also, depending on when your buying, the Antec Kuhler H2O 620 is better, quieter and cheaper than the Corsair H60, but is out of stock at the moment :(

Cheaper RAM - Corsair XMS3 - also low-profile should you wanna go for an air cooler in the future.

No point asking now if he is not ready to buy. Availability, deals and prices will be different.

Should buy everything at once and save on shipping. No point buying components for them to sit around for a month. And this Week's offers aren't great compared to recently.

Need to know the total budget, otherwise builds are gonna be all over the place.

The choice of PSU depends on the graphics card you want and you can afford. 650W is enough for a single GPU, 750W for crossfire £200 cards, 850W, ect...

Most likely to be a 2500K build, maybe a 2600K build if you have a lot of data crunching that can use hyper-threading.

Also depends if your software can make use of CUDA or ATI Stream.
