Gamestation - Closing stores?

Noticed today that the GS in Oxford has been completed shut down. No warnings, no messages just 1 day of gutting the place and today everything is completely locked up and empty.

Not surprised as they are owned by the Game group who are struggling but the lack of any message is puzzling....any other stores shut recently?

anyhow just an observation, and dont be surprised if a store gets closed near you. get those inflated priced games whilst you can :)

I was told many moons ago by the Gamestation in Slough that the Oxford store sold loads of retro gear was that billy bull?

Game are terrible for trading in prices, gamestation will match and beat by a whole pound with places like CeX.

I do hate how there is a massive difference between the online prices and in store.

I used to go specially into these stores to pick up second hand games that I missed dirt cheap but that is not the case as I can pick up brand new online for less. These stores are a dying breed and I really doubt they will be around in the future. As someone mentioned near enough all the big releases I have bought from supermarkets as they really know how to get the punters in. MW2 for example was £32 in asda and BO was £40 with 2400 points in Tesco. Game and Gamestation offered nothing other than RRP.

I used to work at both GAME and GS. I still keep in contact with a few of the store managers and from what they've told me like many companies at the moment they are looking at cutting costs - naturally if they have 2-3 stores in one town center they are going to look at closing one or two of them as there really is no point having more.

Its dissapointing thus far however to see more GS stores go than GAME but I think thats to do with GAME's 'hard sell' approach whereas GS is a bit more laid back and thus dont make the same kind of money.

They closed a GAME around here. It was only a small one but used to go there as the pre-owned games were much cheaper than in the other shops :D I think there are 3 other games shops within walking distance.

I hope that in the future we will still have discs or something similar, I like being able to have it on my shelf. That way I'm not screwed if my console dies and I can still borrow from friends :) Don't like depending on having internet for some reason.

I think we'll still have discs for a while yet, Steam has been prominent on the PC for years now but games are still released on DVD also. :)

PC game salse are the first to go though, a lot of places do not sell pc games anymore and if youre lucky enough to find a shop that does, the selection is absolutely shocking, by that i mean nto even the top 10 releases!

That's true, there are definitely less PC games on the shelves than there were say 5 years ago, but I think that is more down to the current generation of consoles and console games being such money spinners for supermarkets and the like, compared to PC games, I still think that the majority of people think PC's are only good for doing spreadsheets, typing E-Mails and browsing Facebook. I don't think we'll see an end to console games on discs any time soon. The console would need to have more than 250GB of storage if you wanted a decent library of games, music and video, as well as download speeds limiting certain customers, as of course not everyone has very high speed connections. I'm only on 5MB myself and it takes a couple of hours to download a few GB, I wouldn't want to do that for every one of my games and I'm sure I'm not alone.

It's just not feasible to Sony and Microsoft at this stage to say that their next console would be download only, sure they are supporting digital media through XBL Marketplace and the PS Store, but I think in the next generation and maybe even the one after that we'll still be buying games on disc rather than digital only. :)

the one by me shut up a while back, though a friend who worked there mentioned that it was due to Game outperforming gamestation, and both chains are owned by the same company - lose the dead weight etc.
