The press seem to be all over this one.

BBC said:
A suspected burglar has been stabbed to death while apparently trying to break into a house in Greater Manchester.

It is understood the man was attempting to get into a house in Ethel Avenue, Salford, on Wednesday night when the householder tried to defend the house.

The man, 26, is believed to have been carried away by other members of a balaclava-clad gang as they fled, before being dumped in the street.

The householder, his son and son's girlfriend have been arrested.

Greater Manchester Police said it was treating the death as murder.

Prime Minister David Cameron this week vowed to bring in stronger measures to protect homeowners defending their property.

I say good on the homeowner, but no doubt he'll get royally shafted because of this. What the hell are you supposed to do in this situation?

The burglar got what he deserved, scumbag.

While i agree with you, and playing devils advocate here, what happens if stabbing a burglar becomes ok by law. What to stop someone luring someone into their house, stabbing them and then claming they were trying to break in?

going by that logic the rest of the 'balaclava gang' should be arrested for accessory to murder. they carried his body off and dumped it

Didn't Cameron say exactly the same thing back last time this happened? The guy who chased the burglars down the street with a cricket bat?

Seems awful that he is getting done for that. Our legal system has something terribly wrong with it.

Like many people my initial feeling is tough luck as far as the burglar is concerned. No doubt further facts will emerge, it's too early to draw concrete conclusions ...

I would have to agree here. The whole story isn't known at the moment. All that has been reported is that a homeowner killed the man when he was trying to enter the house.

Again, playing devils advocate. If you found someone in your back garden trying the back door, would you find it okay to run out the house and stab them to death?

Edit - wow you guys reply fast - This was meant in responce to robgmuns post...

Nothing, but its an either/or type situation. Personally, I would far rather live in a world where I can legally defend my home, even if it means not going into houses where I do not trust the owner.

Beside, it wouldn't be a case of "You stabbed a guy, but he was in your house, so thats ok" - the circumstances would be taken into consideration. I don't tend to go round to houses I don't know carrying the tools of a their.

I'll play devils devils advocate here.....if you lure them in then they wouldn't have to 'break in' ;)

Glad too see the law has got its priorities right yet again, why on earth criminals are put on a pedestal in this country I shall never know.

If the burglar was unarmed then I find it very hard to justify stabbing him to death. But that said, I don't know the details to know if it was reasonable.
