I never understand why people like others to know they 'never watch TV' and have to preface such talk with, 'I don't watch tv normally but...'

Because they like to think they are much better than us normal folk.
They will then say 'Well I download stuff and watch it' without realising that they are basically still watching TV.
99% of my TV viewing is done with downloaded stuff but I still regard it as watching TV and I think I'm a much better educated person for watching TV.
53 and I feel I know nothing - thanks TV for helping me.

What don't you understand? Normally the OP would be out flying helicopters, scuba diving or abseiling on an evening. He doesn't have time to watch TV with the kind of playboy lifestyle he leads!

I've just got back from the Ecudorian amazonia and i wouldn't fancy trying to make my way through there. So dence and sharp plus everything wants to bite/eat/sting you!

Because I find in the most part that TV is dumbed down rubbish, that would just about entertain an amoebae and the fact they ram product advertisements down your throat so that you become some materialistic sheep.
