Which Gfx card?

Yeah i have around £1000 to spend lol so i could get a new system.

But i dont want to spend much as i'm just a casual gamer as in , When i get bored i turn to games etc.

My system is:

AMD Phenom II 840 3.2Ghz
Gigabyte GA-M68MT-S2 (Socket AM3) DDR3 Motherboard
TP-Link 300Mbps Wireless-N PCI Adapter (TL-WN851N)
Win 7 64 bit
500gb WD Cav blue HDD
60gb SSD OCZ vertex (No longer in the system , Its in its box)
Coolermaster elite 430, 500w PSU

Is that enough to run a card and a game on decent settings?

Yeah, thats enough. The 5830 is also more powerful than any of the budget cards in that link you gave.

What games could i play if i put that card into the system?

I'm into racing games etc

What about my SSD also , Should i sell it or put it back in to the system and run games off it?

Thanks for the help Stu !

If you ahve a SSD in its box then its wasted, get it back in, do a fresh install on it.

There isnt a driving game you cant play on that card, Race driver GRID/Dirt2 etc its all good.

Either of those depending on budget. Although the PSU is borderline. Can you look at the side of the PSU and give us the max amps on 12 volts? is this it?

Ok great , I will do another install on the ssd then run games from that and use the WD as a storage drive. I am thinking about getting a 120gb ssd so i can run both the OS and everything off there as 60gb is not enough for everything :( as i get around 41GB spare .

Thanks

if your into racing games then i believe (but i am very happy to be proved wrong) that Nvidia cards are the way to go, so something like this would be great: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=gx-140-ok&groupid=701&catid=1914&subcat=1830

a lot more than your original £80, but honestly not a major amount to spend on a card

yeah i understand but i dont want to be spending money on serious stuff when i have an xbox etc also . i love racing games on pc so thats the main reason for getting it.

the 5830 pulls frame rates close to a GTX560 in F1 2010 so you could even play that game if F1 is your thing.

I love f1 also so thats great.

Thanks !

I have that PSU. I am not at home atm as i'm staying at a friends house so i'm not sure of the specs until i get back tommorow.

I dont mind paying extra for a card its just the reason has to be good.

That PSU should be just enough, the rest of your spec isnt monster wattage usage, the CPU is a 95W version after all.

What size is the monitor? resolution?

THe problem is the PSU. THe power above sounds about right for the Elite 500W, so based on that, a (relatively) power hungry card like a 5830 / gtx 460 may not be suitable.

The best low-power cards used to be the 5770. Seems to have been replaced by the 6770, which isn't looking so bad at first glance.

If that picture above is of the Elite500W then the Amps add upto 36 on the 12V

Radeon HD 5830
The card requires you to have a 500 Watt power supply unit at minimum if you use it in a high-end system. That power supply needs to have (in total accumulated) at least 35~40 Amps available on the +12 volts rails.

So you will be ok, they also tested with a much more power hungry test system than you have.

I have been meaning to get a new PSU as this one is horrid because its non-modular. So i have leads hanging everywhere.

When i took a pic of the setup someone though i had snakes in my case lol

the elite power PSU is quite happy powering a 5850 + 125W CPU. i know its been specced many times before on here.

with the processor the OP has, it leaves 229W in the 12V rail for everything that needs it. a maximum of 175 of those watts will be going to the graphics card, leaving 54W for the rest of the 12V devices (not sure what else uses the 12V line though)

OK then :) Then I'd take the 460 OC personally. 460 1GB used to be a HD 5850 killer when it came out.

+1

Many people have this case+PSU combo running these cards etc with even the 125W PhenomII 955BE and more.
