Currently got a 5870 GPU but the whining drives me nuts...

Thinking of trying SLI/Crossfire for around £200 that is both silent and beats my ATI 5870?

It must have HDMI. Any ideas peeps?

Single Card - 2GB 6950, flashed to 6970.

Dual Card - 2 x 460GTX. A tad over £200

Any other suggestions are welcome.

I myself are looking for the best 'bang for the buk' £200 soloution. That is what I have found so far.

You can pick up a HD 6850 for around £120, two of these in CF scale very well and are pretty quiet cards (so long as you can keep some space between them).

This chart shows how they compare to a single HD 5870.

That said, if the whining on your 5870 is to do with the cooler then you could RMA it or buy a custom cooler (something from thermalright would be great).

Why not buy a quieter cooler for your 5870?

If you are bothered about noise don't go for a dual card setup. Two cards are more than double the noise due to the extra heat.

Well TBH I am going by the benchmark link cmndr_andi posted as well.

But i look at the 6950 2GB model not 1GB, + it won't take into account the perfomance boost of the 6970 OC.

Any reason why you must have SLI/Crossfire?

I am going for more memory on the ATI due to the triple monitor setup I have (hence the need for 2 460's).

BUT like I said, just starting my reasearch now, shame the anandtech bench can't do anymore than 2 choices. 4 would be good in these cucumstances. :)

and +1 for a quiter cooler on the current card,

I am not bothered about noise as I always play games with the headphones on :)

I'm not THAT bothered about SLI/Crossfire!
It's just that I was seeing if I can get any better VALUE performance wise going SLI/Crossfire! And besides, there seems to be more quiet/silent lower end mid range GPU wise than at the higher top end of the GPU market.

This is likely to be built into my new PC setup. The ATI 5870 I will give to my wife/daughter (PC spec as my signature now below)...

The only other thing I failed to add is this, it's gonna be displayed on my NEW Dell UltraSharp U2711 27" monitor which has a 2550x1440 res! :D

Believe it or not I don't play too many 1st person shooters but I do like to try and stress the GPU on 3D intensive MAME arcade games.

I'm glad you mentioned the above. With this resolution, if you would be enabling most eye candy I would consider a two gpu set up.
