OK I need some help in choosing a car.

My budget is around £1000 plus insurance, and it will be my first car (so 0 NCB) and I'm 20 years old. The car is only really for a short commute and it's only for a year placement so I'm thinking I can go for something fairly exciting.. Obviously is insurance is an issue and it will feel weird spending more on insurance than the car but I need it to commute and haven't really got much money! At the moment I kind of fancy an old 318 as I can get some reasonable quotes on them..

So, throw any ideas at me. I'm not a big fan of small hatchbacks much, would rather a larger car but will still consider!

I'd be shocked if he can get insurance for under £1k, even if his post code is Buckingham Palace with the Queen as a named driver.

Oh sorry guys I must have worded it wrong. £1000 for the car, then plus insurance so I've done some quotes on 318s and I can get insurance for around £1500 which is only £500 more than a Fiesta :)

And yeah, it seems like it will be tough to find something not small but as long as it's still fun I can still settle for it.

You dont want a thousand pound BMW, get something cheap and boring and get a bit of no claims under the belt.

I'm 20 with no responsibilities, I don't see the need to go boring. I've already driven a Passat for the past two years so would rather something a bit more interesting.

Get an Old Mondeo, Passat or Accord or something.

Don't get the 2litre Accord unless you want to spend a fortune on petrol. It's a good car, and is pretty quick (for what is it) and really comfortable. However it is in dire need of a sixth gear.
I miss my Accord :(.

You'll be hard pushed to find anything cheaper to insure, mine was £1300 for a year with Footman james and I'm a year younger.

Car cost me £100, needed a new battery and fog light switch as well as MOT and Tax

Parts cost me £35
MOT £45
Tax £125

I've spent half on buying insuring and taxing a car for a year than a mate is paying to insure a 52 plate 1.4 ibiza.

Believe me a 318 bmw is boring, all the expense with none of the benefits, seriously go and drive one, a 3 legged turtle gonna be more entertaining than that car.

Haha I posted here for ideas! What do you suggest?

I honestly cant think of a decent suggestion, but i do still stand by what i said about a 318.

2 litre Mondeo maybe? you might be surprised at the quote for those.

Did a quote on a 1.8 mondeo and it was only £100 more than a Fiesta! But they do seem a bit boring..

I do quite like mk2 golfs, and they are cheap. Might have to have a look into them.

They are boring, but they drive surprisingly well, and they are quite modern.

You need to be a bit realistic when its a thousand pounds your spending and sort of get the best you can. I cant see a mk2 1600 Golf lighting your fire to be honest and obviously you wont get a decent GTi for that money.

I honestly aint trying to wee on your parade here by the way.
