Never really though of this one but someone pointed it out.

If i was to buy a new car (be it new or 2nd hand)

Do i have to have insurance there and then?

My thinking was no as technicly i could just go view the car and might end up buying it there and then so trying to get insurance is kinda hard.

Yes you must be insured to drive any car on the road. Normally if you buy from a dealer they supply you with 7 day drive away insurance if not you must sort it yourself before you drive!

If you haven't already got quotes lined up before seeing the car that you might buy - in which case you can just call up the insurer of choice and begin the cover - you can use http://www.dayinsure.com to get it home and a bit more time to shop around for permanent cover.

If you have comprehensive cover, check with your insurance provider to see if you are covered to driver other cars third party. If the car's already insured (and it should be if it's not SORN'ed) it only requires the owners permission for it to take effect.

Get it HPi'd which you want to be doing anyway and then you get 7 days free insurance.

saying this, how do test drives work?

If you are buying from a trader, their policy covers you. If you are buying from a private seller, unless you have DOC then you are uninsured. Even if you do have DOC, you are only covered Third Party so if you crash the car you will have to either buy it or pay to have it repaired yourself.

Day insure and free 7 day insurance schemes are age dependant aswell so if your under 21 make sure you check into this

When you are viewing the car, if you have DOC then you are covered under legal requirements (though bending the car on the test drive will require you to pay for it to be fixed). However, once you have purchased the vehicle, then you need insurance in your own name so will need to take cover out.

When I bought my car in February I ran a quote a week before with my insurer for the car I was looking at and got a reference number which I took with me when I picked the new car up. Phoned them up at the dealers when I went to get the keys and they switched my policy over there and then.
