moving into my first house on friday, what do i need to do?

Get yourself on the electoral roll at that address.

Edit: Oh, and if it's rented, I hope you took photos of every little thing you could possibly be charged for when you move out. Be merciless with the inventory too - record everything.

Oh and find out which day is bin day!!

One of the first things I did was change the locks! I think everything else has been covered.

First thing - shag the missus in every room at least once.

Everything else can wait.

Added bonus points if you haven't fitted any curtains yet.

There not much else I can add beside reiterating re your gas / electric. Always take meter readings as soon as you get in there. Scottish Power tried screwing us out of 3 months worth of supply to the property before we'd moved in!

Also - get you're broadband sorted, if you do opt for Sky make sure it's LLU'd! If it isn't, go with another ISP or don't expect to be able to game, stream or even browse at peak times. They really are that bad!

Oh yeah, plan out your computer room and get your home cinema set up ;)

OK i just found out the current owners are with EDF energy for both electric and gas, i also want to go with EDF so when i phoned them tomorrow is there anything i should say to try and get a good deal?

also i changed my mind about going with sky, i did a broadband checker in that area and 3 people on sky are getting 0.3mb and the virgin users are all on 7.5+.

atm the phoneline is through sky and the owners are keeping their number, where do i stand with the phone line? if i dont phone sky up and tell them im the new owner will i get a bill down the line for not phoning in?

Your gonna need to wait on their number being ported across before your line can be set up.

Only way you might get charged is if they need to activate a dead line.

when i moved into my house i was using quidco to set up utilities, around a year later i had got £400 pounds back. It is abit more a pain than just ringing the company's but there you go.

Like everyone else has said, take pics and record meter readings

Crack open a bottle of bubbly

Congrats

hey overclockers.

well the time has come and im picking up the house keys to my first house on friday and havent a clue what i need to do.
congrats - haven't looked at rest of thread so might have been said...
i know i need to phone the gas and electric companys and tell them the numbers on the meters but after this what do i do? do i phone around the electric companies and try and get a good deal or whatever or do i have to stay with the current ones for a few weeks?
Tip - do it online. with Eon i get a discount every month of around 25-30%.

MAKE SURE you take the meter readings the FIRST minute you are in the house and ideally take photos get it verified by the seller to make sure it ties back to the figures when sold (shuld be the same but make sure!)

what about the waterboard? do i phone those dudes up i really have no idea.
in my area i pay £36 a month but use nowhere near that amount - however i wanted a fixed bill. a water meter would be cheaper UNLESS i have a leak somewhere in the system that i don't know about and it ends up costing me a shedload!
what do i do about landlines. i dont intend to get my phone and broadband set up for a couple of months just yet so do i still need to pay the 12.99 land line rental even if i dont want/use it?.
i go through Sky - quick 20mb broadband, phone line, and sky tv with 3 packages... costs me £34 a month all in. :) pay for phone line and get internet free.... sign up for the basic 2gb package - worst they'll do is charge you a fiver if you go over it a lot. :)
thats the only things i can think of atm.

anyone who has recently moved can you please give me a rundown of what to do and how to do it.

thanks Phil x

i haven't recently moved - moved into first home in november (had house nearly a year - moved in 6months ago)and had to sort a lot of stuff as was reposesion and they owed a llot of money so spent ages checking figures like lectricity/gas etc to make sure i wasn't paying the previouss bills! power companies lke it if you dont pay attention i've found....

they charged me an estimated usage based on previous owners - only reason i knew is that when i got the bill i KNEW i had not used 1 iota of gas so qureied it, then got the entire electricity bill refunded too!

thanks for the reply, some great advice. when i phoned the waterboard she was like "it will cost you £393 a year" i said "Eh? really?" and she was saying she could put a water meter in for me for free and should drastically reduce my bill.

i still need to phone the council tax up, eugh.

oh and EDF said something like they would charge me £70 for gas and electric a month for the first 3 months and come read the meter and base my monthly payments from that or something.

About right for water unless you get a meter.
Council tax - go up. Don't phone... council workers aren't the brightest.
budget around £50 a month for gas/electricity if on your own and sensible with it.
I always go fixed as I like to plan costs. I'd save money going variable but until I've beenvin the house a couple of years.

At first both the electric and the gas will want to charge you a complete fortune until you've got a track record. When I first moved into my flat British Gas insisted on setting the direct debit at £35, after about a year I was several hundred quid in credit. They've now reduced it to £12.
