I put this in gaming but really its a PC hardware issue.

Basically mines stopped working and according to internet searches and youtube videos you can fix it by reapplying new thermal paste were the fan/heatsicnks connect to cpu/gpu?

It seems to work in most cases of a YLOD/red blinking light error which I have.

How does this work? It seems odd

Sony will charge 150 to repair or replace lol. I can fix myself easily for free if so.

Anyway I will try as soon as my heat gun arrives in the post

I think it overheats and expands causing components to not sit right..

I think... although that may be xbox I'm thinking of :D

I opened up my PS3 last week to try and fix my Blu-ray drive, took me ages but finally managed to get the new one in, and it turns out we've been scammed, and the new one we got was faulty  :p

Be prepared for a lot of dust and a lot of screws :D

this happend to one of my freinds ps3's. he just went out and bought a new one to save the hassle. am trying to persuade him to give/sell me his old one so i can have a go at reapiring it. so i am intrested in how easy it would be

I know 2 people who fixed their own PS3, both died again in a short amount of time.

The Thermal paste isn't really the issue, If it was the system would still boot from cold till it heated up.

The issue is like the 360's some of the solder joints have broken and need to be repaired, This requires heating your mobo (if you will) up with a heat gun to try and re-flow them. You won't b-able to find the joints by simply looking for them.

Most repaired ps3's die again soon after. I'd just buy a new one and sell on your broken one for parts/repair.

right yeh I need to use heatgun also.

So you think this is only a short temp fix at best?

I dotn think I get much for it I have seen them go as cheap as 20 quid broken on ebay.

I will need to pay 250+ for a slim model...whicH i will take extra warranty so you are talking 300 quid maybe

Personally I think buying extended warranties is a total waste of money. The PS3 comes with 1 year manufacturer warranty and I've only ever had two electronic things die on me and both were consoles, firstly:

PS2 - It was faulty when purchased, took it home, played GTA3 for 15 minutes and the vehicles were glitching through the floor and textures weren't loading. Took it back to the shop, got a replacement which is still working now.

Xbox 360 - Falcon model which RROD'd on me after about a year and a half, used the online service and booked it in for a totally free repair which fixed the problem and it's still going strong even now.

That's it. Never had any problems with a TV, mobile phone, DVD/Blu-Ray Player, PC or anything else like a kitchen appliance. Unless you're abusing your things or you don't look after them properly then I'd say that extra warranty is a complete waste of money in my experience. Unless the product ships with a fault or is known to be dodgy due to poor manufacture, like the earlier 360's and some models of Playstation 3 then extra warranty on top of the manufacturer warranty isn't needed.

Also the slim models start at around £190. If you're desperate for a larger hard drive than the 160GB you can just buy a cheap 500GB laptop drive or something. Or use an external one so I think your estimate of £300 is a bit high. :p

Well my ps3 lasted 3 years so yeh maybe its poitnelss to buy 3 year warranty if it is likely to alst 3 years if it works out the box?

I have a 500gb Hdd i think for my ps3 Ill just put that in my slim. I think its same size right? However cheapset slim I can see is 235 on amazon and thats basic console no package and 120 or 160gb hard drive? That is the cheapest new slim I can see on interent...play.com also similar deal,

235 for new..then 50 for 3 eyar warrnaty..but say I dont buy that its still 235...maybe I get 20 quid for my broken ps3?

The ideas behind extended warranties are quite flawed when it comes to the consumer buying them. They're a great money maker for those that sell them though.

In the case of your PS3, the YLOD is a manufacturing fault, and as such isn't ruled by a "warranty" as such (like a 1 year manufacturer warranty). In such cases you've got 6 years from the date of purchase to make any sort of claim, but it's up to you to get, for example, an engineer report on it to prove that it was an inherent manufacturing defect.

Its pretty standard that sony do a trade for refurbished model for 120 quid if after 1 year warranty.

I dont know if you can challenge them and demand free replcement? But most people have not so it would seem.

Yeah they use the same 2.5" 9.5mm drive, you can however pick up a 320gb slim at Shop to for £240

Looks like Amazon have bumped the price up, it was only £190 last week. If you can hang on a little while longer there is supposed to be a price cut on the PS3 sometime this year. :)

Thats true, I know I have quiet a few spare HDD's laying around doing nothing, and you could sell it, but like you said you probably wouldn't get a lot for it

Be prepared for a lot of dust and a lot of screws :D

Strangely enough mine never had a lot of dust when I stripped it down a month back or two. A few little bits here and there. Apart from that pretty good use from Christmas 2007.

As for the screws, my god it's not funny. They are miles long. It makes PC building look like a tinker toy. It's like a maze in the PS3 but an easy one if you take your time.

I've found the best way to combat the dust when it's not in use, I always lay a game case on top of the vents so nothing falls in/settles with mine sitting vertical.

I was over my brothers yesterday and we were going to download Dead Nation to play together. I hit the update button, the PS3 rebooted and then just beeped with the red light >< It's the launch 60gb version too which is a shame. More importantly my dads F1 2010 disk is inside lol. It wasn't the update that caused the problem obviously as it hadn't even downloaded it yet. Just really annoying that it was me that pressed the button!

He's going to try the heat gun thing tonight to at least try and get the disk and his saves off though His saves may be on the cloud as he had already got the PSN+ thing for free for the month.
