how would I tell if the console has been banned? Just ask the seller to get onto psn? Or would he have to play a game? Never touched a ps3 before so I really wouldn't know. I've xboxed all my years :D

For the price that they sell used consoles for, you may as well just buy new. The 160gig ones normally knock around the £196 mark, which makes used a poor option imo.

A quick google found one for £199.
 
are the consoles banned from day one then, or can they be banned at a later date?
only reason i ask is ive just got another PS3 used but it works ok now and dont want it going off in a months time etc :p
 
They do ban consoles but only in very "severe" cases like hacking I've heard. My Cousins cousin was he says :p Makes you unable to go online, or log on with any PSN IDs on that console.

But I'm not sure and I wouldn't risk it anyway to be honest.

Individual games can be banned too. Seen plenty of people moaning that they've been banned from Black Ops servers by Treyarch because they've been using naughty hacks in-game.
