I've just received a free copy of Shogun 2 due to a recent purchase of a new graphics card. I'm still downloading it:mad:. I'm pretty sure if I wanted to I could have got it quicker from a torrent site.

I'm wondering why it's so slow, and why I didn't just receive a disc?
If I format my machine do I need to go through all this again?
I'm not suprised people use torrent sites when downloads are so slow from Steam. I also remember myself and others having a lot of problems with DRM in an another game.

thanks.

steam has been fine for me,i get on average about 7meg from steam and only had a few issues with speed when there has been sales on.

Odd normally steam is very fast! I got Shogun II with my new headphones and also had to download it through steam and while yes it took a few hours it certainly wasnt slow (untill i hit my cap, damn you virgin)

20mb connection downloading from steam at 2.4mbs then 500kbs at cap. had it done in a few hours.

I would also have prefered a hard copy in case of format ect but i got the game for free so really i cant complain.

Make sure your download location is the closest server, made a hell of a difference to me.

I wasn't given a choice.
It's not my type of game so I'm not really desperate to play it, I just found the whole download thing ****ty and I wouldn't do it again.

You can always back up the files steam downloads on a dvdr or somit. And just when u dl the game let it start then quit steam and copy the files back to where they should go and start steam and it should have it done more or less minus any patching needed of course.

Just guessing of course.

Try a NL server, usually good speeds from them.

Is there a way to burn a hard copy?

What is steam and whats the point of them?

Steam is one of the best innovations to hit the PC gaming market, and anyone who says otherwise is a heathen that deserves to be burned at the stake (And knowing some of the posters here, they'll try their best to make it happen!)

Why use it? Well, if you're just going to torrent games, then you obviously don't care for having legit copies, so there's no reason. For people who do buy games, it usually maxes out our connection, so we get the games way faster than any other method. They have extremely good sales which counter their sometimes rather high prices for other games. And the steam chat is the best way for gamers to chat to each other (text-based) as the overlay allows this, plus a web browser etc so you don't need to minimise the game to chat.

In short, how dare you question it :p

Tell me about it.

I bought Virtua Tennis 4 on steam yesterday. Took me one and a half hours to download.

I calculated how fast it would have downloaded through other means and I got 8 minutes.

You can copy your Steam folder to an external drive so you don't have to redownload when you re-install.

Oh and what is your bandwidth like OP? I downloaded Team Fortress 2 (I got it as part of the Orange Box) and was pushing 4MBps... :D
