I'm currently considering Xfiring my HD6970 with another 6970.

ODD x1
Sound card PCI-E x 1
Sata card x 1

I'm currently using a 4 year old Thermaltake Toughpower 750W. Think this will be enough to power the Xfire setup or will I need to look into getting a new PSU.

If I was going to get a new one. I think I would go for the Corsair HX 850W. Quite sure that would last me a while. I can't see me ever needing more power than that.

It should be ok but the only thing that goes against it is the age of the unit.

I know :(

It's not modular and it's brutal trying to cable manage in my case. There just isn't the room.

Good excuse to upgrade it I suppose, I don't want to be spending £100+ on a PSU I don't need however.

Guess I'll see how it goes if I ever do Xfire.

Agreed. The age is a little concerning. Running a system like that in crossfire with a modern 750w would be no problem but I dont know of a way to test the health of a PSU :(
The 850w Corsair would be plenty and allow for upgrading to SandyBridge or Bulldozer if/when you decide to, if it were me i'd grab a new PSU. I've seen a few Pop when installing new 'hungery' graphics cards (including one of my own!)
A nice thing to note is that companies are trying to lower power consumption with newer hardware - relatively anyhow. So upgrading to Sandybridge or upgrading some older components might well reduce your power consumption :)
Kind of intriuged to see what this Bulldozer chip requires seeing as AMD have always been more power hungery, but thats offtopic!

Looks OK. In case, purchase a wall socket power monitor to see how much it will peak (pushed hard at furmark + prime95), but I would think it will be fine gaming. XFX 850W otherwise :)

I've been meaning to buy one of those for a while. Can you advise me what to google please?

I looked at the XFX range. It was appealing, but I've heard good things about Corsair support. For the sake of 20 quid, I fancy the HX.

Go for the 750w Black edition by XFX. It's modular and it uses the same OEM innards apparently (Seasonic). It's also quite a bit cheaper.

The age of the unit will play no part of your build, i hope that my psu is still a good 850W supply in 4 years time ! seriously there will be nothing wrong with it !!! if you really want to loose some cable you could cut and insulate the unwanted cables, Would be a fiddle to re attach them if you want to use them in the future tho. But would get you a "modular unit" i have butchered a few psu's before now they make great bench supplies for charging lipo's :D
