Ordered some components on Friday for a saturday delivery.

i5 2500k
Asrock Z68 Extreme 4
2 x 2gb of G-skill ripjaw

Installed it, adjusted voltages (cpu 1.2v, memory at 1.5v) and put windows on yesterday morning, then waited best part of the day waiting for Black Ops to install.

Once installed I fired up black ops and tried to change the graphics setting, example the res and aa but every time I tried to apply changes the game crashed, spent a few hours tring to fix this to no avail.

I then tried Cod World at War and that would start but freeze on a black screen, I then tried altering Black Ops through the config file which worked but it was very flakey and would crash when tabbing out of game etc.

I then left switched the pc off for the night and I tried again this morning, checking voltages, ram, reseating things and even removed my Xonar sound card with no fix.

Then while browsing the net looking for similar issues I smelled burning, I double checked and it was coming from my pc, I turned of the pc double checked connections and turned back on. Apart from games everything else seemed fine until then I had a loud crack and the pc turned off :o

It won't turn back on and I have switched back over to my Skt 775 system which is ok!

I did try a small overclock on the stock cooler in the midst of this but returned back to stock settings with having these problems.

Going to ring the supplier tomorrow, I reakon it must be the mobo.

Rest of my spec is>

Thermatake toughpower 850W
GTX480
Xonar DX1

No, I couldn't.

My pc is on my desk and with having only the stock cooler fitted I have my side panel off, so when it went crak I could tell where the noise came from, the sound came from the right hand side of the mobo near the 24pin socket.

I have filled in a return form asking for all products to be returned as I don't want to take the risk of something else being damaged too.

It makes sense why nothing would run correctly now.

I am gutted.

I have had it nearly year, no issues with my skt 775 system which I am back on.

Surely it would cause problems with this system too?

A faulty motherboard makes more sense.

hi did you use the 8 pin power connector on the asrock? And does your socket 775 only use a 4pin? Just a guess. My mate went from one board to another and his old board was fine but his new one poped it was down to his psu as when he got a rma board back it did it again.

Yes I used the 8-pin power connector, my Asus P5Q-E is the same, it also uses an 8-pin.

I installed black Ops on my 775 rig and everything was fine last night with a couple of hours of gmaing, the i5 system wouldn't even let me change settings in game with out it crashing.

I have never had an issue with this psu before, the i5 mobo uses an 8-pin connector just like my Asus, are you still sugesting my psu could be to blame?

What happened then, did he get a new psu and motherboard? Did his old system work fine like mine?

Obviously I don't want this happening again, but with a few mentioning the psu, it's putting doubts in my mind :(

My RMA has been accepted for a refund.

Now I don't know what to do about the motherboard, do I order the same again or go for something different?

The company I purchased from said it was the first one they have had returned.

Is it possible there is a compatibility issue?

EDIT: I have emailed Asrock technical with my issue, see what they say :)
