Evening all - well it is where I am at least

This question has been bugging me for a little while now and I thought I may as well ask in here seeing as I did buy my rig from oc in the first
Place

I would like to upgrade my current bfg gtx295 which I am selling for 150 British pounds (hopefully to a mate of mine - he hasn't confirmed yet) and I was wondering what the best card to go for would be. I am not too fussed about which vendor I go for ie nv or amd even though I have only ever owned nv cards.

My options that I M thinking of at the min are the gtx570 and the gtx580 - the issue with the 580 is that I have an ocz mod extreme 600w and I am wondering if that would be enough juice ?

So two questions that I have searched all over the place for an answer

1 is my psu capable of enough power for a gtx580
Currently I run
I7 920 @ 3.2
6gb ram
Gigabyte x58 ud4 mobo
Gtx295 @ stock

2 if I do go for the Gtx 570 will I see better performance in the games I play at the moment and any up coming games - I play at 1280x1024 and occasionally 1920x1080

Hope someone can help me with these questions so I can move onto bigger and better things

Cheers

Welcome to the forums!

The 600w may be enough for a 580,however, I would upgrade. Think of it as an investment into your computer's stability!

A 570 will max nearly everything out a 1920x1080 so there's no need to worry. A 580 is fairly overkill for 1080p unless you want Crysis 2 maxed out with all the fancy stuff aswell.

I'm presuming you're budget is higher then the £150 you're going to get for the 295?

I would also consider a 6950:

Seems a silly time to invest, do you play anything that needs more than a 295?

My 285 is struggling with some new new titles with AA/AF ramped at 1920x1200 but it's more than playable. Seeing as it's a while for some of the big titles this year might it be worth waiting?

If you cant help but sell up now then might be a tough call, I would be personally looking at the 580 just to doubly make sure I could play titles off it for as long as possible.

Thanks all so far
The only games I have struggled with are the usual suspects like metro and just cause I guess I am waiting on the big boys like bf3 and the likes

I have looked at the 6950's but they fail to the 570's don't they ?? I don't really don't fancy doing the flash to 6970 - knowing my luck something will go wrong either in the flash or later down the line :)

Open for any more advice

If you have an and CPU then its better to go for a 6950 but if you have Intel then a 570/580 will be better

There's only a small difference between your card and the 570 GTX. In games that run < that 60FPS you're literally looking at a couple of fps if that.

If you're going to upgrade you have to go for the 580 really.

The 295 is already a powerful card, the only cards I can think of worth upgrading to is the 590 or 6990. If I was you I would wait for the next gen cards and see what they offer.

You will be forever waiting for a newer card, even when the 7xxx series cards come people will say wait for the 8xxx series and see what it has to offer, just buy what you want now and enjoy it..simple

Have to agree with this statement really.

If your asking the question of upgrading, then you potentially want to move forward, if you move forward with say the GTX570 buy it and enjoy it, and dont look back.

Computer technology is always moving forward, you might be waiting forever to get a new GPU.

The GTX295 is a great card, and tbh £150 for the card is a good price. I say move forward and buy the GTX 570 :)

Totally agree with this, there will always be something better coming out, if you want something now just get it. I went from 2 4870s which is similar to a 295 and changed to a GTX 580 and the change is amazing, no more poor SLI/Xfire scaling to deal with in certain games and lovely DX11 graphics :)

I currently have a GTX 295 and ordered a GTX 590 yesterday to replace it.

I agree with the above re. waiting... There will always be something newer, faster, bigger and better on the horizon. The right time to upgrade is when you want to upgrade... which is now. :)

cheers reaper - will i get any performance benefits do you think other than the dx11 stuff
?

The way i see it, its not just about the performance. You have to IMO take everything into consideration.

The way i see it is, DX11 is better than DX9, the GTX295 was/is a great card, remember is basically a dual GPU, the GTX570 is a single GPU, but IMO the GTX570 will give you the required frame rates that you will want, you will be able to play most games with max settings, the GTX570 really is a very good GPU.

Price and performance it is also a worthwhile contender, temps will be lower @ idle and load, my old GTX295 used to idle about 46/48, my current GTX580 idles @ 35. Also the GTX570 uses less watts.
