Hi GD.

I'm thinking of applying to a games company, they ask for an e-mailed CV and a covering letter, but I've not actually done one before.

Can anyone give me any tips / templates / what to put and what not to put, etc?

I have a personal profile on my CV, is that related to a covering letter? or is completely different?

Cheers.

Cover letter is like

"Hi there, I'm pure brilliant I am. Been thinking of working in this industry for a while, it will suit my panache personality yadadada. Heard you were a great employer, gies a job you dobber."

It's not Blizzard, no.

I'm also a moderator on the game, only around 4000 of them out of a few million people. I dunno if I should mention that too.

I so badly want to write a covering letter along the lines of:

Dear Sirs,

I consider I would be an excellent addition to your team for the following reasons.

1) I pride myself on not being a complete retard. It may sound trite but in my previous business dealings I am continually shocked, amazed and often perturbed by how retarded many employees can be in every possible aspect of their employment.

2) I am capable of actually doing something properly and on time. Again, it is my experience that many employees appear to take a perverse pride in their sheer incompetence and inability to undertake the simplest of tasks in the most generous of timescales.

Given the above characteristics I believe I am a class above any competing candidates - if during my employment I show myself to be either retarded or incompetent please let me know at the soonest opportunity and I will go jump off a bridge.

Yours,

xxxxx

Well, I'm possibly interested in Player Support, so having knowledge of the game is a plus I would imagine.

Anymore advice guys?

You need to show them that you're committed and motivated, have decent knowledge of the game, can work flexible hours, have an idea of where the game is heading in the future, want to help people and have good experience in dealing with customers.

I've just gone through over 150 applications at my job, from five page covering letters to half a page.

Interestingly enough the half page covering letter application has been invited for an interview with the comment,

'who wants to read a long cover letter anyway?'

Granted the CV is very impressive but it does make you wonder!

This is for a pupillage in a barrister's chambers.

Wouldn't mind getting a pupillage in a barrister's chambers. Skully, you and I should go for a beer some time. :D

Just sent of an application to work at a legal publishing company though, need to get some financial stability before I proceed with the LPC. Had to write a covering letter for that too.

I go with the standard letter format; my address and contact details top right, date underneath, recipients address under this to the left, start with Dear Mr./Miss./Mrs. Bloggs (contact said company and find out who you are addressing your application too, they'd much rather you phoned/emailed to find out rather that sending it to an open sir/madam), the intro paragraph of what the purpose of your letter is and any attached documents, second paragraph, why you want the job and why you're suited to it, third paragraph give an example of how/why you're suited to it, optional fourth paragraph with additional example, fifth paragraph any times/dates pertinent to the application and job, sign of 'yours sincerely, WhoeverYouAre'.

Try and keep all that on one page. No more.

DEAR BOSS GUY,

I WANT TO GET PAID FOR PLAYING VIDEO GAMES AND MY MOM SAID I NEED TO MOVE OUT OF HER BASEMENT SO THE TIMING COULDN'T BE BETTER. I AM FAMILIAR WITH PEOPLE AND HOW THEY WORK AND FEEL THAT I COULD HELP THESE PEOPLE IN SOME KIND OF SUPPORT ROLE (I WOULD DO THIS BY COMPUTER BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE ICKY). I WILL ACCEPT ANY SALARY BUT MUST INSIST ON A CONSTANT SUPPLY OF CHEETOS AND GATORADE.

I AM VERY BUSY WITH RAIDS AND IN-GAME WEDDINGS FOR THE NEXT 7 WEEKS BUT WOULD BE HAPPY TO MEET WITH YOU AT A LATER TIME (MONDAYS, TUESDAYS, WEDNESDAYS, THURSDAYS AND FRIDAYS ARE NO GOOD BECAUSE I RAID. ALSO, WAIT, SATURDAYS TOO). SO SUNDAY IT IS THEN.

OK, I NEED TO GO NOW BECAUSE MY ANIME SHOW IS STARTING AND I WILL NOT MISS IT. I WILL NOT. SO BYE BYE.

LOVE,
IRSEAN.
