Ok - some background info;

I use a Gillette Sensor razor. I've Had it for ages. I replace the head/blades as the wear out. I've always been happy with the shave I've got from it.

Fast-forward to today. Mrs Quink buys a female electric shaver. She is a bit reluctant to try it so I say "Give it here". I then proceed to stroke the new electric shaver over my cheek.

"Brgrggrrrrrrrrr"

"There, easy" I say, but am amazed at how much hair the damn thing has managed to get from my cheek!!

I don't hair up fast, but this thing seemed to get hairs I never knew were there  I'd had a shave a few hours earlier too.

I then used her new shaver to do my upper lip and compared it to my wet shave. The only way to get a similar smoothness was to wet shave against the grain. OUCH!

Looking at a few reviews of men's electric shavers, some minus points seem to be that it's not as close as a wet shave. I'd say this lady shave gives better results than my razor . Am I so behind the times that my razor is totally obsolete, or can a decent electric shaver give better results than my old Gillette Sensor!!

(Thinking about this http://direct.tesco.com/q/R.204-7381.aspx)

Pros and cons guys, if you please, and some alternatives :)

(We've some free money from Tesco at the moments ;))

I've only ever used electric shavers, so can't comment on wet shaving obviously. However I don't see a need to start wet shaving, my fairly cheap £30 (I think) shaver has always given me a decent shave. Cuts close enough that I consider it very smooth, could probably get a closer shave wet, but I don't think it's worth it.

It's annoying though if I've forgotten to charge the battery and it's not got enough charge when I'm in a hurry!

I've got a Gilette Fusion which is pretty decent, but I do fancy trying a Merkur.

I got my merkur as an experiment, because I have quite sensitive skin, after a few cuts getting used it, it now completely piddles over my old Mach3 turbo, plus no more razor rash.

These Merkur razors - Are they really that good for getting a close shave with a reduction in razor rash?. I use a Mach 3 and it is fine if I go a day or so between shaving but if I shave every day ( my job means I can't have any stubble at all ) it usually rips my neck to bits no matter how careful I am.

I recently started using a Philips HS8420 Coolskin and its very good but nowhere near a close shave as a wet gives you, obviously.

I was toying with the idea of a Merkur, even got some good quality shaving soap that was on offer.
My partner then treated me to a Phillips HS8460 for my birthday, very happy with it. As a seasoned gilette user, sensor to Mach, to Mach Turbo, to I am bored this.
I shave in the shower so the fact this Phillips is waterproof is brill, it actually takes a little longer I believe then a wet shave surprisingly and can still never get the little bits near my scrawny necked Adams apple.
Overall I prefer the ease of it though and still wet shave occaisionaly and also plan to get a Merkur DE in the near future.

You epilated your face?

**** that!

Definitely I used to get terrible shaving rash back when I used the fancy 7million bladed things but since switching to a Merkur and some proper soap and a bush my face is fine, plus the blades are so much cheaper

Ok, where's the best place to pick up one of these Merkur thingies then?. Can you buy them on the high street somewhere or are they online only?.

Agreed, same with my 8420, doesn't matter how much I try, my neck still looks like it hasn't been shaved properly.

where's the best place to get a merkur from and which one should i go for? Im not paying £20 for 5 blades anymore gillette!

I have tried a lot of electric shavers and none have come close to Gillette fusion proglide.

I also have a Merkur HD 34c, it's pretty good yea, you need to be infrond of a mirror and really take your time, holding it at the back and treating your skin before and after shave.

The differences between the products are just weight and size as far as I know.

After 3 weeks of using the Merkur I want back to Gillette despite the blade costs because it's so much easier, you can just shave it any directions, anywhere and as hard as you want. so much easier, and you get just as good shave to be honest.
