Hi Guys,

I'm currently running an i7 920 @ 3.8 GHz on a X58-UD5 mobo. I've seen these (cheap) hex-core intel LGA 1366 'Q3QQ 3.06GHz' chips for sale on ebay and they look like (and are advertised as) i7 980x-like. They have 12MB cache and an unlocked multiplier.

Question is, should I get one to replace my 920? Will it work with my Mobo? Will it overclock ok to ~ 4.0GHz? Will I need a new Bios?

It all seems too good to be true (considering the cost of 980x / 990x chips)

Thanks in advance for any advice/help!!

Toby

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Firstly, you're not allowed to link to auction sites.

Secondly, those are engineering sample processors which can't be sold legally. They always remain the property of Intel.

Thirdly, as they are engineering samples who knows if they'll work in your motherboard or overclock if they do.

Woops. The auction finished and I didn't cancel my snipe bid in time )-;

Is it worth getting for testing or could it break my system?

It probably won't break your system but paying several hundred pounds for something which isn't the finished product isn't something I'd do.

Contact the buyer and ask them nicely to cancel the purchase.

If they won't play ball tell them you'll report them to the auction site and Intel for selling engineering samples illegally.
