Hello all

Ok, I am going to buy a new Monitor. I currently have a Viewsonic vp171s, but Im selling the Xbox coz the games are a big let down - poor frame rates - so i have a new pc on the way a 2500k with a 560 ti...

So, I want a new monitor, purely for gaming and doing my college work on - word processing, web design, photoshop etc.

The confusion that i have is do I go for a 16:9 or a 16:10?

I am on a tight budget or around £120. I have read that a 22 inch 16:9 stretches the pixels and it is better to get a 20 inch for sharper images and gaming - is this true??

Or should i just try to get a 24 inch 16:10?? - not sure if any are in my budget - if you know of any please post up.

I will be sitting probabaly 3 feet away from the monitor probably a bit closer when sniping on battlefield :D

I will not be hooking up a console to the monitor so no need for an hdmi port.

Just need some advice on the best possible solution to my needs which also fit the budget ...

Peace out

You can get a good selection of 24"monitors for £150, shop around & you find may find some cheaper.

One thing I like about my 24" is when using Word, I can have two A4 pages side by side, & for gaming you can't beat a 24".

The whole 16:9 and 16:10 thing is really personal preference. All modern games will support 16:9 and 16:10 resolutions, and old ones if they lack widescreen support will generally lack support for both ratios, so it doesn't matter. The only thing is if you want to watch a lot of films, they are in 16:9 so they will have black boarders, albeit small, on a 16:10 monitor.

As for size, in this price range it really does matter ;). 22" is fine to game on though if you're worried about expense, I've been using a 22" monitor for years now and it's great :).

If you are on a tight budget 16:9 is the only way to go because you get so much more for the money.

And there are plenty of new games that doesnt support 16:10. Assassins Creed Brotherhood, Witcher 2, Dungeon Siege 3 and Alice Madness returns are just four examples.

16:9 is the standard for gaming.

I really love 16:9 monitors and would never go 16:10. 16:9 is a much more confortable screen aspect ratio.

personally i LOVE 16:9 monitors becuase when i watch stuff, it fills the whole thing and looks like a TV :D :D :D

Cheers for that, very interesting.

Sometimes even knowing I'm spending £150 on a monitor its hard to grasp that that is actually a budget figure for such a large monitor and its good to be brought back down to earth like that :)

In the long run it usually is cheaper to buy a bigger monitor than 21,5" because you can keep it for a couple of years or so. With a small monitor you will look for an upgrade within a few months.

23 inch or bigger is the best choice. (and 16:9 obviously if you play games)

lol at the people raving the 16:9 in this thread, the fox has fooled the sheep in to beliving it is their best friend. :)

The panel makers reduced supplies of the better 16:10 panels on cost base, hence the mass flooding of the TV based 16:9 panels. Where PCs/Games are better suited to 16:10.. ohh well.. there aren't many 16:10 panel monitors left now anyway..

I am not sure how well I will adapt to 16:9 coming from a long time 16:10 user, I guess the vertical space will be much missed with web, but on the other hand with a large display are 16:9 perhaps better as a monitor.

Unless you buy a really small monitor the height isnt an issue when browsing the web. The width though is important for many applications such as games, movies and multitasking.

I came from 16:10 and still own a 16:10 monitor but the 16:9 monitor just feels more natural and practical.

Yes I also get the same feeling when I tested a few at work, I do sit quite close to these :( I think 16:9 is easier to navigate eye-wise, but we shall see.

Wow, I had no idea that so many games didn't support 16:10. Other than old games that don't support widescreen I've never had an issue with any of the games I own, I'm surprised new releases are having problems with it.

I guess laziness on the developer's part

Well, not really. More and more games are primarly made for consoles. And economically it is hard to justify to remove black bars on 16:10 displays when the developers need to focus on bugs.

It is pretty simple. Unless the developers make money on 16:10 support they will not implement it. And the amount of 16:10 users decline for every day so the economic incentive to implement 16:10 support decline continously. It is pretty obvious that the problems that have rised for 16:10 users in recent years (since 16:9 became standard) will just appear more and more frequently.
