Phenom II 955 be best bang for buck

i5 2500k is WAY better than the phenom so if you can afford it then i would go for it.

however, if you are making something like a gaming rig, then if your budget is low (~£450 or less) then going for a phenom starts to make sense

Would it drive my 2 5850 Extremes much better than my Q6600 @ 3.5?

I'm still planning on waiting for BD or Ivy Bridge but with an SSD on the way I wouldn't mind moving to SATA 3 and faster RAM.

clock for clock the phenom is quite similar to the Q6600, so you could get an improvement, but not much of one

faster ram wont give you much advantage at all these days, except if you are planning on using llano and its onboard graphics

prehaps just get a SATA 6GB/s PCIe card?

not really 955 has similar performance as q9650

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/88?vs=49

if clocked higher its one good chip considering the value

that link you gave shows that the q9650 is considerably faster, did you read properly that some of those benches LOWER is BETTER?

also take into account that the 955 is clocked 200mhz higher.

Clock for clock phenom 2 is probably on par with if not a bit slower than a q6600. single threadded apps the intel will win all the time.

i don't think 10 pts or so is considerably faster.

i went from q6600 3.6ghz to q9650 4 ghz to 1090t 4ghz and found it faster not really relevant to this tread but anyways.

955 would be much better and faster at 4ghz witch is easy to achieve or even at 3.8 with push of a button then q6600 3.5.

Excellent ship for the money, and I bought mine new from elsewhere for £60. My OC is stable at 4.3Ghz under an Antec Kuhler 620, temperatures while running prime never go above 60c.

Are you thinking of "upgrading" from a Q6600 to a 955BE?
That would be quite terrible value at any price really...

There's not enough performance difference in it.

Sorry, but I just don't believe a lot of those benches. Pretty much all the Intel Quad Cores of that generation that I've ever used, even when at similar clocks to Phenom IIs ... well, the pace is just very, very slow ... even on really well set up systems.

Getting a 955, DDR3 and a Gigabyte UD3 AM3+ board is definitely amazing value, but I think it'll be even more amazing value sometime in the next 6 weeks with the LLanos & Bulldozer launching and the AM3+ mobos no longer being brand new.

no point in swopping for what u gain.

is great value if upgrading from say a dual but not any quad really.
