Canon 70-200mm f2.8 mk2 - lens for pros?

You can get a second hand (mint condition) 70/200 f4 IS for £600. You'll wait a long time to get a second hand 70/200 f/2.8 IS II, so you'll prob have to buy one new for £1600+. The difference in sharpness between the two is minimal, both have 4 stop IS, the f/ is half the weight and quite a bit small, so is 1 stop worth the £1000 premium? Only you can decide that. You can buy an awful lot of class second hand lenses with that thousand quid you'll be 'saving'.

Just my 2p.

Lens > body.

i will get a 7d at the end of the year or sometime next year. i want to build my lens collection first.

I agree that lens comes before body but ask yourself how much you really need the extra stop of the f/2.8 Mk2. The f/4 IS would cost you a grand less which, together with what you could sell the 400D for, would get you the 7D.

I'd take a 7D & f/4 IS over a 400D and f/2.8 IS Mk2 any day.

Better yet. i'd take a 9d/5dmk3 and a f2.8 mk2 hehe.

i get what you mean but a 7d + f4 is is more expensive then a mk2 f2.8 lens.

7d is around 1.2k body alone and the f4 IS is 900

thats over 2k . more expensive.

I need IS at the focal range for my needs anyway. i dont walk with a tripod all the time so the f4 none IS is not an option, PLus the weather sealant could prove to be useful as well.

f2.8 is very useful. people say its only 1 stop. 1 stop is a big difference between shooting at 200mm at 1/200 vs 1/100 hand held.

Also, i dont think i will upgrade my body to another crop sensor. it will have to be a FF from now on as i know that once i go "L", i will never look back and most if not all "L" lenses were designed for FF body's.

i.e there is no 17-xxxmm type L lenses as 24-xxxmm is wide enough on FF but not on crops.

The fact that my 400d with this lens can produce this kind of image with no PP whatsoever is astounding

And shows that 9/10 its all about the Lens quality.

Their are people sporting 300d's and all that and shooting high grade **** on L lenses today.

It seems to me you made up your mind so get the MK2 and be happy with it.

As for what you said about not wanting to lose a stop of light on the lens going to 7D + f/4, just wanted to say that aperture and shutter speed arent the only factors determining an exposure. You do have ISO as well and let me say that the 7D noise control at high ISO is worth more than 1 stop over a 400D so you can easily raise it to speed up the shutter.

Either way its your money so spend it the way you want, but I think there has been some good advise in this thread regarding alternatives.

I am now a proud owner of this lens :)

my first L lens. took me 3 years to get to where i am today!

Started off with the kit lens that came with my canon 400d and then a year later, bought a nifty fifty prime f1.8 lens and then last year i bought my awsome tamron 17-50mm f2.8 along with a 430ex2 and now today my first ever L lens and instead of going cheap saving cash and buying the f4, i decided to go for the full yards and get the best 70-200mm i can get!

Will give this lens a proper test this weekend but all i can say is wow the build quality is sensational.

Next up on the agenda is a new body. :)

Pictures of new kit are needed! Congratz!

I has the jealous :( My first L was (and is currently my only L) the 70-200 F4L. It's very nice, but I want your lens. Wanna swap? :D

*Looks at nikon kit lens* :(

It's beautiful!

Anyone know how it compares to the Nikon equivalent, or will I have to end up on the dark side?

Here are a few from my new lens. most i diddnt pp and some i did just to add some effect on it.

Went central london with my wife yesterday and bought my lens along with me but sole purpose of yesterday was to sort something out and do a bit of shopping.

Turns out, their was some sort of parade going on around regents street/trafalguar square so snapped away making good use of my lens hehe.

In terms of weight. it wasnt too bad you know. i had it inside my lowepro fastpack 350 bag that had 2 bottles of water, my 400d gripped with the 70-200mm mk2 along with my tamron lens inside and did not feel too heavy and i walked from trafalguar square all the way to selfridges and then back down near tottenham court road lugging around my gear and it wasnt bad at all..

cant understand why some complain about weight?

anyways enough talk, here are some pics
