Hi

My 1 year wedding anniversary is coming up next month, im looking at taking the wife away on a weeks holiday. we both enjoy hiking and im looking at possibly Croatia?

I dont know if any of you have done anything like this before, i was thinking about maybe a hotel in a mountain range with access to nature really.

Any suggestions?

(something like this would be idea: scenary: (http://www.google.com/search?q=Plit...&source=og&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wi&biw=1920&bih=934)

Thanks in advance

I know someone who just came back from there. Here's what they said. There are a few hotels next to the entrance of the park, which are basic but do the job. Food choice is poor in these hotels and bear in the mind there's nothing close by. The scenery is stunning apparently they covered most of the park in one day (12 hours walking). They stayed in the Hotel Bellevue.

I would have thought if you want mountains, somewhere like Sweden or Norway would be better? The mountains in Croatia didn't seem that expansive (although as RockLobster has said, absolutely stunning!) but obviously Scandinavia is going to be a lot colder than Croatia! (possibly not such a bad thing if you're going to be doing a lot of walking =P)

I don't know about the mountains, but I went to Zadar last year and enjoyed it thoroughly

Oh yeah, Croatia is fantastic, went to Split, and then camping on Pag island last summer, going again in August and can't wait! Not really somewhere to go for mountain walking though! =P

If you don't mind something a bit commercial, maybe Centre Parcs?

Otherwise, find yourselves a nice cosy cottage with a proper coal/wood fire in the Lake District or the Highlands, lots of good walking/cycling etc around there =) (Loch Lomond is nice if you fancy some sailing/canoeing/windsurfing etc too)

Tax rates in Sweden and Norway are throught the roof though. Pint could end up costing you £10. But true, the moutains are breath taking, and if you get there the right time of year, NORTHERN LIGHTS :D

Plitvice lakes is stunning, but a day trip. It is also fantastically busy and you hike along trails following thousands of others. It is definitely something to see but as a 1 day trip in a longer holiday. Croatia is an amazing country, and very varied.

did you go then? any recommendations where to stay etc
looking at it myself. not sure whether to take day trips or try flying in to one place and out the other

I think Austria would have been a good place to go hiking, Salzburg Lake District is perfect for bike rides or hikes. Extremely scenic, think sound of music filmed there? But I would agree Norway or Sweden also.

I`d look for Zakopane, Poland... Get a car, you can visit Krakow which is a nice city... I was shocked by how cheap it was, there are restaurants that serve food untill 5 am in the morning and a beer costs 1 pound for 0.5l.

Most pubs/restaraunts in center of Krakow are underground, you walk into 1 and it looks so small... but then they take you down the steps to aladins cave lol :D

Zakopane has plenty to walk through.
