Do YOU have a towbar?

If so, ProTip - When you are not towing anything TAKE IT OFF. Then when you commute to work in your tow enabled trailer-less 4x4 and reverse into a space you don't stuff it into the front of peoples cars, like mine, while I am sitting in it.

That or learn how, perhaps, your 123819281928foot tow bar hanging off the back increases the overall length of your vehicle, you know - That's a distinct possibility when you put it on.

lol

sorry, no really it is very annoying when people do that.
I will not be removing the towbar from my landrover however, too many rusty bolts, besides, how else am I going to know when there's no more space behind my vehicle without the IAS (interference alert system) provided by the drop hitch and towball? :p
In all seriousness the only time I have ever nudged another vehicle was when some fool parked his car less than six inches from my rear bumper and the vehicle in front was a couple of feet away. It took ten minutes of opposite lock (not as exciting as it sounds) to get out. I was not impressed and the guy behinds car rocked about a bit. But common sense says don't park right up somebody arse, so I didn't loose any sleep over it.

Feel the burn SS :p

Regardless its unacceptable, I would be raging if someone leant on my car never mind bumped into to it, to help aid parking!

Do YOU have a towbar?

Not on this car but if I had a car with one on I certainly don't need to use it to help me park & risk damaging other peoples cars.
I feel an Ally keyboard attack is imminent. + :p

I agree in principle. when i went into the back of someone he went into the van in front and blew his radiator and intercooler apparently. should be illegAl unless your towing really. the amount it must cost extra on insurance claims compared to non tow bar related crashes must be huge.

So because of your inadequate driving ability, people should have to go out of their way to stop you causing other people harm is what you're saying?

My Lolvo had one because I bought it in the Netherlands where every man, woman and child has a caravan.

I only ever put it on the car for the MOT. I had enough trouble parking in Brussels without the tow bar :p

Sorry i think your interpretation is lacking.

what i am saying is that accidents that occur with tow bars involved are likely to cost more to pay out on by insurance companies due to the destructive shape/position of them. if bare tobars were banned the cost of a crash would surely be less resulting in lower claim sales and therefore lower premiums for those buying insurance, capiche'?

It kind of like how car makers can't have protruding badges like January on the bonnet- encased they crash and spear someone.

Perhaps by that logic no-one should drive an expensive car because they are more expensive to repair?

I doubt tow bars significantly increase the overall cost of claims.
Even among accidents where tow bars are involved - the car with the tow bar may actually may escape damage, which offsets some of the potential increased damage on the other car!

I have a removable tow bar on my car ... however I'd like to see you actually remove it lol. One winters worth of salt and it had corroded together with the attachment to the point that you'd probably need an angle grinder to get it off!

Expecting people to remove tow bars when they aren't using them is a major inconvenience to solve a very minor problem.

Protruding badges were responsible for pedestrian deaths. I doubt tow bars are responsible for many!

And no, I certainly don't bump park with my tow bar! However it has amused me to watch someone else who was intentionally trying to bump park against my car without realising there was a tow bar fitted :) That'll teach them! :o

No. Because I have a post 1997 license, I cannot tow anything larger than a matchbox without paying the government £130 and a days long course. Despite the fact that an 80 year old woman who cannot even see over the steering wheel is allowed to.
This :(.

Removable towbars are great though... it means you can put it on to tow your trackcar for the day and then remove it so you don't look like a caravan owner :D.

That said when someone rear ended our Audi Estate (queueing at the M5 Exeter exit slip) we had the removable towbar fitted and it took most the impact and reduced the damage to our car. Can't say the same about the front of the other car though :D.

Oh and LOL at SS's quote from the past :p.

I don't usually remember old threads and their posters, but that one was etched in good and proper :p

Glad you see the funny side of it :)

The thing is, I'm now the kind of person that parks the other side of a car park furthest away from where I need to go in order to avoid people dinging my car, haha! So yeah, definitely see the funny side.

Although it would have been funnier if I'd tried to defend myself! :p

The Mondeo I have recently bought has a tow bar.

It's a Ford branded tow bar. It's quite a neat install, the electrics swing up behind the bumper. The actual bar bit is held on with two bolts. Is this classed as a removable bar?

I'm undecided if I should remove it or not as it protects the rear bumper from people hitting it when parking. It's not that obtrusive, I could always paint it the colour of the car?

My Impreza has a towbar assembly including the full electrics because the first owner had a bike rack.

Don't think it's ever towed anything, and the second owner, and then me, have never even had the tow ball to even attach to it :)

I can just imagine SS going to a meet and austin powers style parking inbetween two forum members cars. Reverse, bump, forward, bump, reverse, bump, forward bump...haha ;)

I've got one, and it stays off the car apart from when in use as it's detachable.

Not because i can't park or don't fancy spearing someones radiator but because they are horrible ugly looking things!
