UK Copyright Lobby attempting to restrict the Internet in the UK

I think as soon as we start censoring the internet, even to a small extent, it'll be the start of a slippery slope towards heavier censorship.

And then how long until people are able to 'sell' access for $$$.
"Pay your ISP £30/month for internet, and an extra £20/month for access to Youtube, Facebook and Twitter" anyone?

OK Thanks. Won't apply to me as I dont own any p0rn.

No worries, doesn't matter whether it applies to you directly or not, it's the whole system that is broken.

Isn't that like half the internet?

This whole thing is ridiculous, this month Australia is trialling allowing ISPs to block certain sites so unfortunatly I can see this getting quite far.

Ah yes, I forgot about that bit - Australia is getting out of hand with it's internet censorship from what I've read.

I'm sure that's what the elite want to do with the internet. Make it centrally controlled and regulated like TV is with only a few corporations owning it.

Due to the nature and capability of computers, they'll never be able to regulate it tightly like with TV. At least I hope not anyway.

Yes their bill allows for ISPs to censor child pornography (fair enough) but also "other unamed international organisations" oh well that sounds like it will be used fairly and above board.

They can censor cp in the Uk, the iwf goes over the top though and bans whole filehosting sites that have legitimate use.

Could this really succeed?

Given Cameron's love towards private interests almost certainly.

Once they start censoring piracy based websites it's a slippery slope imo, it wouldn't be long before Wikileaks sources and stuff like that start getting blocked.

OK...so lets preempt them - how do we get round the blocks (that haven't been put up yet)?

I've heard something about proxies and a TOR network, but I have no real clue how to surf anonymously or how to evade filters...it's not illegal to talk about this stuff so there isn't any worry about talking about it on here.

So how is it done?

Proxies are easy you just search for one in google then enter the URL you want and it routes it through another country.

If proxies get blocked too you could set up a VPN based in another country but you would need a server in said other country to do that.

I forsee a country doing for the internet what Switzerland has done for banking, anonymous internet hosting and massive proxy and VPN servers, in some tiny country with no internet regulation.

If this went through I can imagine VPN providers would suddenly find themselves with a hell of a lot of new customers.

You can buy a US vpn for litereally £2 a month. I use one to run downloads overnight and then stream them off the server, idiotic idea.

US? Do you know about the US Patriot (patriot - hah!) Act?

As far as my understanding goes, the US government / law enforcement agencies can demand to see any record held domestically or internationally by any US based company, that means they can read all about what *you* are doing if it's with a US company.
