It's a lot better; I really like the direction Google's design is going in atm. It's long overdue.

Agreed, no one likes change but this is definitely good and I like it very much.

I like it but the contrast between the different parts is not enough, especially on my crappy work monitor.

I usually use the Night Shade theme, I'll keep using that for now I think.

I agree. A bit more contrast is needed, but otherwise I really like it.

It's change for change's sake. A Microsoft speciality - but I guess everyone does it. However it remains to be seen whether it'll be any more useful or not.

Absolutely not. The old Gmail looked pretty awful and a lot of people I know didn't use it for this very reason.

This new one is probably the best looking online mail client I've seen, certainly a huge improvement.

The main reason is for consistency with Google+

The overall reason being that little number notification to the top right of all google sites. That little number is designed to keep you using Google for longer

I've been using GMail for years and I don't think it looks gash. It's just plain and functional which is something I like. Functional changes aside, cosmetic changes purely to add an element of 'newness' to a piece of software is just par for the course. As I said, change for change's sake.

What YOU like isn't important, I think the majority of people thought it looked pretty horrible, so Google changed it. More people will now like it, so more people will now use it, hopefully.
