Due to a change in job role I will be doing lot's more driving in my new job and need to get a sat nav sorted.

I have been looking at a Tomtom 1005 device but then started to read some of the user comments about it's poor software support and issue's connecting to a PC which has put me off slightly.

I have an old Tomtom 720 unit and I could update the maps for £40 but then I won't have the HD traffic.

Then I looked at the Garmin unit's but i'm confused by all their different versions with nulink and the choice is not clear which one is the definitive one to go for.

Does anyone recommend a particular unit? Or should I save my money and just update the maps on my old device and hope for the best with the traffic?

Mine has been flawless! As for battery, I wouldn't know, it's always been plugged into the lighter.
Yes, I'm sure they're not all as bad as mine, but it's still an issue that should be considered. I'm not sure a dedicated satnav is nescessary in this day and age though - I've found my phone more than adequete for my needs.

Or...
What are you driving? You could get a nice head unit with built in DVD & Sat Nav :)

Am getting a company car, a Vauxhall Astra estate with basic everything. I'm not so bothered about the car and i'm glad to have a job to pay the mortgage to be honest.

I was given the option of a car allowance, but only 4k a year which would'nt pay for much these days.

I'm thinking Tomtom will release a replacement for the 1005 unit in the next 6 months so i'm going to update the maps on my 720 for now and try and dodge the traffic jams best I can.
