I hope Andy Schleck manages to beat Alberto Contador this year. It was so gripping last year.

As a Manx-man I love watching this now to cheer on Cavendish. Has really got me into watching the sport

Make sure you lay out slices of Hovis on the road saying OcUK for us to see! :D

It's the French countryside... they only sell good fresh bread. In fact you get an apology if they run out of that day's fresh dough and they have to use frozen.

I might be able to spell it out with some baguettes :p

Over/under on the number of days elapsed before the first failed drug test? I call 3 days.

In all seriousness, Le Tour is one of those events which seems to attract people who aren't regular cycling fans. I for one can't seem to take my eyes off it.

It's just a same that the spectacular breakaways never occur any more. What was the name of that French guy about 12 years ago who pulled out an early 20 minute lead and then spent most of the next week desperately trying to hold on to it through the mountains, before heroically sucumbing? That was brilliant.

e: it was Cedric Vasseur in 1997. A solo 147km breakaway, we need more of that.

Yeah, I'm afraid that's me. I would love to follow more cycling events but there just isn't the terrestrial media coverage for such things as Vuelta a Espana, Giro d'Italia, etc. It's a shame they aren't shown free online but the rights are sold up to TV stations which restrict viewing to their own countries or require subscriptions.

Looking forward to it :)

I think tomorrow will be a day for Hushovd, then if Garmin can do a good TTT he'll keep the yellow jersey for most of the first week.

For me the summer only begins once le tour commences, and they're going the right way round this year. Wonderful!

What's the word on the mountain stages, are they proper killers? One hopes so. :D

Anyway, I'm backing Andy Schleck but I doubt he's really got what it takes to take on the dodgy Contador. Other highlights will be Cavendish doing the business, while Wiggins and Evans talk the talk, but get left for dead when it actually matters. :p

Stage 8 is the first bit when they hit the Massif Centrale with a category 2, then stage 9 is a full day of ups and downs. :D Then the real fun begins with stage 12 in the Pyrenees and the HC Col du Tourmalet.

Nicely, ITV4 are showing 4 hours of stage 12 so that is good news. Also there is an ITV4 Tour app for iPod touch/iPhone which is offering live streaming from up to 90 minutes before TV transmission begins on some days so you can watch it at work. ;)

Search the iTunes App store for 'ITV Tour Live'. It's £2.99 and works on iOS 3+ (luckily for me that is my first gen iPod touch. I was expecting iOS 4 only). :D

EDIT: Doesn't work on iOS 3. Crashes. Have contacted Apple for a refund.

Yeah, i'd like to see andy win as well.
It's hard to guess what sort of form each of them are in.
Andy seems to be a lot further ahead of where he was this time last year based on his form in the Tour of California (he finished way down around 30th(?) or something - but still rode a lot better than last year).
Contador was really strong in the Giro but he was expecting a hearing with the UCI before the Tour and there was a good chance he wouldnt be allowed to ride. The hearing has been moved now so he is free to ride - but he may well have focussed entirely on the Giro and not have such good form for the Tour.
I think the rest of the field is a lot stronger this year and there wont be such a big gap between 2nd and 3rd.
Should be a great race.

Looking forward to the team time trial on Sunday, should see if Sky have what it takes to compete for a podium place! I can't see them pulling out much of a lead though with some of the other teams like Leopard-Trek having Cancellara on board, plus there's Garmin too.

Would love to see Schleck overhall Contador, hopefully his brother can stick with him this year to give him some support up the hills.

Team time trials are different from individual time trials tho. Having a very good time trialist like cancellara can actually be a disadvantage because he is so much stronger than the rest of the team that it disrupts their rythm. It's much more important to have a team of equal riders to do well in a ttt (HTC usually do very well and they dont really have any time trial specialists).

Looking forward to this years tour although i can't see Contador losing tbh, i've stuck a couple of quid each way on Cadel Evans, just have a feeling he'll do well.
Hoping to be able to catch some of it live while i'm at work, (work in a sports bar) but have set wmc to record all the highlight shows on itv4.
The points classification should be great again with Petacchi, Horshovd and Cav battling it out for the green jersey.
Cav has won 15 stages in 4 tours and he is only 26, can he go on to eclipse Eddy Merckx's record of 34 stage wins ?
