New PC Final List ( Hopefully )

Hi Reaper 392.

I appreciate your suggestions, and whilst I agree with some of it there are things that I can't get my head around. For instance 3D, I don't want 3D.
I really thought that 2 Graphics Cards were better than 1. I may be wrong but I know I can't afford 2 of the cards that you have suggested, albeit a brilliant card. I also wanted to consider multiple Monitors, 2 at least. In your list of items you only mention 1 Monitor. Good but not quite right yet.

i would personally change the case to something better for cooling.

corsair 650d or haf-x.

sound card i would go for a asus as they are far superior to anything else on the market.

can i ask how old you are ?

i know it sometimes makes no difference how old you are but if your younger you might like flashing light's and if your old like me (43) you might want a case that is a bit refined in look's.

Hi Schizo.

Was this what you meant by the HAF-X.

Not a bad looking case and comes with a PSU, don't know if the PSU is any good, but if it is, it's included in the price.

In that list he has put 2 graphics cards and 3 monitors so his list is correct and comes within your budget. Even though you don't want 3D those monitors are 120Hz instead of the usual 60Hz so they are going to be pretty good for gaming in 2D. I am not really interested in 3D gaming but if i had the equipment to use it i would give it a try.

Hi Everybody.

I am getting a little confused with different things being thrown at me. Can I please ask if we can do it methodically and deal with one item at a time. Like case first. Motherboard next. Then CPU. Then Graphics Cards and so on. That way I can start compiling a new list and know the prices as we go along. Otherwise I am going backwards and forwards looking a different things. So please, if you don't mind, lets get one thing at a time out of the way. Up to now I have two possible cases that I like the look of. Has to their efficiency, that's why I need you guy's and your experience. It's important I know to get the right parts, but it's also important to me to.
A. how it looks and
B. how it performs.
Hope you understand where I'm coming from, it's just easier for me that way.

Guess i owe reaper 392 an apologie. I didn't bother to add things up and just assumed it was priced with one of each of the Graphics Cards and the Monitors.

BIG, BIG APOLOGIE TO YOU. REAPER 392. SORRY. :(

So your list does make sense and come in budget.

Boy do i feel a dork now.

EDIT.

Just noticed the little bit before each item, IE: 1x & 2x & 3x etc. Again so very sorry, and what a brilliant list.
Now I have scrutinized it and read all the comments from people who have bought these items, I am really happy.
In fact I might be 50 something, but I'm quite excited at what this system can achieve. I've waited a long time for something like this,
a very long time, now I'm quite excited at the thought of it up and running. Thanks again Reaper 392.

not a problem mate :) when i read your post i figured you had missed the x1, x2, etc

The only thing i can say about reapers list is i would maybe go with 2 graphics cards which will have more memory if you are going to have 3 monitors. I am not really up to date on multi monitor set ups but i know they will need more graphics card memory than a single monitor. There is a thread somewhere which lists games which can use more than 1Gb of GPU memory just on a single monitor so it stands to reason that having triple the resolution could use a lot more memory. I only have a single 1920x1200 monitor but i bought a AMD 6950 2Gb graphics card just to make sure that i was covered for the future. Maybe others can confirm if you need to swap the graphics cards for some with more memory for eyefinity. You could also drop the Nvidia 3d vision kit if you are not interested in 3D.

Oh, also, i would get a 900 watt power supply for an extra 20 quid you could drop the DVD writer as the blu-ray drive is also a DVD writer.

Just thought of one big problem. It's me that's got to build it.
I hope I can do it justice, being my first self build that is.
I have the collywobbles just thinking about it.

i can understand your worry about this, so i've listed all the parts where there is really no reason not to get them from my spec:
(long post warning)

i5 2500k
the two best processors on the market today are the i5 2500k and the i7 2600k. they are totally identical, except the 2600k has hyperthreading. i wont go into the details, but hyperthreading will not help with gaming so it is not orth spending the extra £75 on a feature that you wont use. however it will help with video encoding, large photoshop files, CAD/CAM work, etc.
comparison of the two here: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/288?vs=287

Silverstone Raven RV02
this case is one of, if not the best for air cooling on the market because of its rotated motherboard. it has fantastic airflow, and has a side window to see all the loveliness inside. the cable tidy features are great, and theres no shortage of hard drive space.

ultimatly, there are lots of very good cases around though, so the most important thing is to choose one you really like the look of, as there isnt a major difference between the top cases.

Corsair XMS3 8GB
4GB is generally considered just fine for gaming, but there are a few games creeping out that will benefit from more. with it only being £62 theres really no reason why not.
this ram was chosen because 1600Mhz is pretty much the sweet spot between speed and value for money. it also has short heatspreaders which mean it will fit under all CPU coolers on the market, unlike RAM with tall heatspreaders like the corsair vengance, and even the Gskill Ripjaw, both of which wont fit under the silver arrow. if the kingston 1600Mhz RAM was cheaper than the corsair i would have chosen that instead

Thermalright silver arrow
the thermalright silver arrow and the Noctua NH-D14 perform remarkably similarly, and are considered to be the best coolers on the market short of getting a custom water cooling system. they beat the more expensive all in one water coolers as well by a reasonable margin. its difficult to find differences between the silver arrow and the D14, but the silver arrow seems to sneak ahead by a whisker. however, with the silver arrow being almost £20 cheaper than the noctua its a no brainer

Mechanical hard drive
generally the recommendation here is to get the cheapest one from a reputable brand, while avoiding a couple of the stray 'slow known brand' hard drives like the F1 series samsung spinpoint. the connection type does not matter as long as it is some form of SATA connection as mechanical hard drives are simply not fast enough to benefit from the faster connection.

Blu Ray drive
i dont know much about these, but getting the retail version is very much recommended because i remember seeing several threads saying what the OEM drives couldnt do but the retail ones could. ask in the optical section if you want

DVD drive
there is very little difference between DVD drives. generally the recommendation is the cheapest DVD +- RW SATA. the OcUK value one is generally avoided in the same way that stuff like tescos own brand beans would be avoided if its the same price as heinz.
i went for the LiteOn simply because there were three different drives that were £16.99, and this one was faster than the other two (24x rather than 22x). the difference wouldnt have been that noticable but the improvement was free so there was no reason not to

as for the rest of the stuff in my build, there are plenty of arguments for and against getting them, but hopefully this will help you with a good chunk of the build :)

Hi Kingy666.

What about this one, it has quad rails and 4 X 8 pin PCI-E connectors.

dont worry about it. putting a computer together is very difficult to go wrong as everything is standardised, meaning it will fit in one place, and one place only.

also, dont worry of you need help every step of the way. in the few months ove been on OcUK there has been several threads where people needed help putting their computer together, and it has gone on for more than ten pages while they ask for help/confirmation every step of the way. dont be embarrassed about itas its going to be your first time building it, and we've all been there and known how nerve racking it is

the reason that one is cheaper is that it is not modular. modular power supplies mean you only add the power cables you need, and dont have a sea of wire spaghetti next to the PSU.

generally i would recommend an XFX 750W modular PSU, but they arent going to be back in stock until next week, so i substituted the 700W enermax. the 900W version would probably be better though:
http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-010-LA&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=2057

it is more expensive because it is rated at 80+ gold, rather than the 80+ bronze rating of the 850W lepa. this means it will waste less electricity, saving your electricity bill a bit :)

Firstly thank you for all the trouble you have gone to compiling the list above.
Has the question about Corsair vs Kingston, why do you mention the choice of Corsair being made simply because of price. Is the Kingston better ? if so what about this below.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-094-KS

The other thing is the second optical drive. Someone earlier mentioned the second optical drive wasn't needed as the BluRay optical drive does everything the other does so why have both. What do you think.

Also another poster said I might need a more powerful PSU, 900watt.

And they mentioned about the 2 Graphics cards you recommended may not have enough memory, again your thoughts please.

I'm happy to upgrade to what you suggest, after all it's only money and we can't take it with us, can we ? ;)
It's only 20 quid more, no problemmo.

Here is my attempt. First a few points on the difference between my suggestion and Reapers:

1) I have included windows 7 home premium as you need an operating system.
2) I have included a 2Tb drive for storage as you will get windows 7 and a fair few games on the 128Gb SSD.
3)The Krypton Baronyx bundle comprises of a motherboard, CPU, 8Gb RAM and CPU cooler. This bundle will make it easier for you to build your system as overclockers will have pre-overclocked this bundle from 3.4GHz to 4.6GHz and also includes a 12 month collect and return warranty. You will have no faffing about with trying to find the voltages for your overclock as it's all done for you.
4) I have included 2 x ATI 6950 2Gb FLEX graphics cards. The FLEX range lets you plug 3 monitors in to it without the need for display adaptors (use 2 DVI and 1 HDMI in the LG monitors i have put on your buy list).

Here is the list of components.

"Krypton Baronyx" Intel Core i7 2600K 3.40Ghz @ 4.60Ghz Overclocked Bundle - MSI £589.99

2 X Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 6950 FLEX 2048MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with upto 5 Monitor Support & with FREE DIRT3 Game £459.98

I am sure someone will pop up and say i am totally wrong or i have missed something :D

Thanks Kingy666.

I really appreciate everyone's input. I will have to search all these out. I assume that everything is available on OCUK. Has to the Operating System, I completely forgot about that, don't think it would work very well without it, heh.

My list was all taken from overclockers and, i think, was all in stock. The prices will change as some items are on the weekly specials so they will go up in price next wednesday. Welcome to the forums by the way ( this is a place where mancs and scousers can help each other, it's like some alternate universe ;))

theres really no difference between them, thats why i (and most people on overclockers) just suggest whats cheapest. today it happens to be corsair

The other thing is the second optical drive. Someone earlier mentioned the second optical drive wasn't needed as the BluRay optical drive does everything the other does so why have both. What do you think.
i honestly thought you'd got the 2nd DVD drive because you would be copying straight from one DVD to another. blu ray drives arent quite as fast as dedicated DVD drives at burning DVD's, but theres really not a lot of difference so its best to save the £17

Also another poster said I might need a more powerful PSU, 900watt.
as youve already seen, ive recommended the 900W one now as its nice to have some headroom

And they mentioned about the 2 Graphics cards you recommended may not have enough memory, again your thoughts please.
sadly i really havent a clue on this one. its probably best to ask in the graphics card section

Yeah you said it. Don't think things would be this friendly at old trafford. ;)
When on Wednesday do the weekly offers end.
