Earlier this week we had a very near lightning strike and as a result I've had a huge amount of electronic equipment in the house destroyed. I've lost my fridge/freezer, a load of amateur radio kit and the following Apple hardware:

Mac Pro
Mac Mini
Time Capsule
Airport Extreme
AppleTV

The loss adjuster from the insurance company is coming out on Monday, this is going to be a big claim.

No surge protectors? Or were they not enough?

It didn't come through the mains, or at least I don't think so. I think there were three points of entry which were the phone line. BT have had to replace the cable to the telegraph pole as there was a failure where it runs outside my house. Through the Ethernet cables I have clipped outside around the house as the cable tester I borrowed from work is showing pairs down and down my aerials into my amateur radio kit and from there straight into my Mac Pro via USB.

Oh dear! Thats rubbish!

My house was struck last year, came in the phone line (saw a flash from the master socket when it happened)
Router fried and iMac Ethernet port fried. Surprisingly my main rigs Ethernet was fine :/

It wasn't a direct strike, anyone who says they've had a direct strike and still has wiring intact probably didn't actually have a direct hit because a direct strike would just leave vaporised wires in conduits and the whole premises would need a rewire. I think it hit very close to here though as houses either side didn't get it quite as bad as us.

I think the Ethernet ports on the Time Capsule, Time Capsule and AppleTV have gone because I can still see them by wireless and in fact I can link to them wirelessly but of course they aren't talking to each other by Ethernet any more. Therefore I hope I'll still be able to get to the TC backup. My Mac Mini won't even switch on and the Mac Pro tries to start but fails miserably.

Important data is also backed up off site so even if the TC isn't accessible I'll still have the important stuff. If it's not accessible I'll have a lot of missing media but I don't think it'll come to that.

Yes, it's covered by my insurance. With the amateur radio kit and other stuff that's failed I reckon the claim will be pushing 10k.

ATF, no. iPad and iPhone, that's it.

That's bad. At least you are ok tho.

It's not just the gear it's all the time involved.

If you do get the payout you want what do you intend to get?

* runs of to check house insurance cover *
