So my friend bought these 2 things and was hoping to get 120Hz for games and such, but he can't figure out how to actually use 120Hz. In Windows (Windows 7) the only option is 60Hz in the display properties. He's tried installing the monitor drivers from the disc and from the Samsung website, and the video card drivers are up to date. It's an Asus HD6950 1GB.

We've googled around for solutions but can't really find any. One mentioned using the dual link DVI port instead of the single link, but that doesn't make a difference.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Cheers

One mentioned using the dual link DVI port instead of the single link,

you mean cable ?
the monitor should have came with the correct cable.

was there not a problem with the ati 5 series cards and 2d refresh rates ? not sure if they sorted it with the 6 series.

Nah, the video card has a single link and dual link DVI port. According to a review I read anyway.

Sometimes on AMD cards you need to apply a registry edit to get 120Hz - someone else might have the details readily to hand, I don't have them noted down here.

AMD and 120Hz is a bit hit and miss tho, even with the registry edit you may find you get flickering (sometimes solved by manually forcing certain clocks/disabling power mangament options) and/or tearing or stuttering in games... seems about 50/50 if it works or not and some people never get it working quite right.

Can you name a video card that definitely works with 120Hz? He's willing to change card if it means getting 120Hz working. Preferably around the same performance as the HD 6950.

Make sure you are using a dual link cable.

He's using a DVI-D dual link cable. It came with the monitor, so it should be the correct one.

Have you tried to set the refresh rate on the actual monitor itself?

Change it to 120mhz, then windows will be able to change its self to 120mhz too..

He's looked through the monitor onboard settings and there is no option to change the refresh rate there.

Thanks guys

There is no option on the monitor to change refresh rate - not sure if thats what opethdisciple meant or if he meant to go into the display control panel and change refresh rate for the monitor there.

I'll try and find the registry changes needed but my google has failed me right now and I don't have a copy of it at home.

If hes serious about using 120Hz then he'd be better off getting an nVidia card such as a 470, 480, 570, etc.

Same, I couldn't find anything through google. And yeah, we've tried setting it in the Windows display properties and in CCC. The max he can choose is 60Hz in both.

Have you installed the monitor drivers so that Windows and the GPU can recognise it as a 120Hz monitor?

The monitor drivers are installed yes.
