All my Apple hardware has been destroyed.

Sorry to hear that, my uncle suffered something similar, lost his laptop, mobile, TV etc. What offsite backup are using? I'm sure a lot of people like me just got a little worried about data security.

Surprised no-one's chimed in with "Worst list my Apple hardware thread" comment yet

This isn't GD.

Everyone in the house has their own Dropbox account with it pointing at the individual 'documents' folders.

where do you live ?

I'm on the east coast of Essex.

At least you've got your iPad!

That stinks.

Having said that though, I suppose it'll mean you'll get the current versions of all of those bits.

If the insurance company is going to foot the bill for it all and let you buy it yourself, you know where to come ;)

I'll replace what I've got with the current versions. There's a chance that the Mini and the Pro may have been refreshed by the time this is all sorted so of course if that is the case then I'll get them.

My daughter is eligible for discount so it's all good.

* runs of to check house insurance cover *

my heart skipped a beat when i read this Feek am gutted for you :(

This isn't GD :p

Gutted... although at least you have insurance to get it all replaced... I don't have insurance as of yet and this makes me think I should have it :/

Although I don't have much worth insuring... MBP and a DSLR... both of which are taken out of the house so not really covered anyway unless you pay an arm and a leg :/

You can get lightning protection for Cat5 links, worth a thought for people concerned about their own setups.
As pointed out earlier, a backup device on the network is vulnerable to this sort of event, so therefore it isn't a safe backup without some degree of protection.

Lots of server rooms have UPS protection but do nothing about the signal lines going in and out :)

It wasn't a direct strike, anyone who says they've had a direct strike and still has wiring intact probably didn't actually have a direct hit because a direct strike would just leave vaporised wires in conduits and the whole premises would need a rewire.

Sorry to hear of this freak event but good job you're correctly insured.

You are correct regarding the above as my aunt's house took a direct strike around 10 years back and it blew blocks out of the wall! Let alone needing a rewire.

It didn't come through the mains, or at least I don't think so. I think there were three points of entry which were the phone line. BT have had to replace the cable to the telegraph pole as there was a failure where it runs outside my house. Through the Ethernet cables I have clipped outside around the house as the cable tester I borrowed from work is showing pairs down and down my aerials into my amateur radio kit and from there straight into my Mac Pro via USB.

I had a similiar thing a few years back. Came down the phone line, blew a port on the router and the network card on the mac mini. I now have the phone line surge protected. Though your issues have reminded me that my aerial cable is connected to my mac mini too. I wonder if it's possible to surge protect them?

This is God's way of expressing his unhappiness with your non-standard forum font. :p

(I kid, I hope your insurance covers everything!)

Holy crap mate sorry to hear this!

If you want some RAM to add to yours to help with the claim let me know :p

Time for an update.

I've had two representatives from the insurance company visit now, the first one wasn't a techy at all so he called on a third party company to come and test everything. When the second guy came I was expecting a bucketload of gear but all he had was a PAT tester! In the end all he did was to take photographs of everything and make a list.

I spoke to the insurance company yesterday and they advised that they've received his paperwork along with two quotes I submitted and my original list of everything with their replacement values.

My claim has been passed to the team who work out values and I've been told to call them tomorrow to find out how they're getting along.

So there's a good chance that by the end of tomorrow I'll know exactly how much they're going to give me.

My total claim including all my Apple kit, my amateur radio equiment, the fridge/freezer, various other electrical items and our security system comes to around £10,000 by my estimate.

You could argue that buying a current Mac Pro will be more expensive than the value of your older one? (because it will be)
