My GTX295 is dead, straight up dead. Going to try and get it on warrenty, but failing that....

I'll be looking at a GTX580 (not sure on 1.5 or 3Gb models), but I've read that the GTX600 series is coming out in Q4 of this year....

Should I hold out until then before dropping serious money on a card?
...if I'm gonna wait, any recomendations on a card that will suffice until the 600 series?

I do a lot of 3D design work, so I need a card that can deal with that as well as gaming

(I've always been an nVidia person. I'll be running upto 3 monitors on this rig)

I'm not a fan of the waiting game, epecially when we're talking about quite some time away with no fixed date. Personally I'd buy now.

nVidia's been slower than ATI/AMD when moving into new nanometer fab process. Some rumour suggests that the 28nm cards may be released around September/October, while some rumour suggests Jan/Feb 2012.

I would expect 28nm cards by Christmas.

I would buy a 560 Ti and wait for 28nm Kepler or go ATI. Don't be stuck on one brand, you will only lose out that way.

If you want to run 3 monitors for youer 3d work then get a cheapish 5850 which an ideal gamers card and is a good fit for you requirements. And being fairly cheap it won't lose to much of your investment when you come to sell it on and you can keep it until the new Nvidia cards come along. Unless you go SLI you can't run 3 screens on a single geforce card.

Not a bad suggestion. A 5850 isn't that slow either. It's not as quick as the 295, but not that far off. Plus you haven't got any potential SLI issues.

If your running 3 monitors even for desktop stuff currently nVidia cards (aside from a couple of 3rd party re-designs that I don't think are available in the UK) can only run 2 displays per GPU. Tho for desktop stuff the 2nd GPU to drive a 3rd monitor can be as cheap as you like, no need for a matched pair unless you plan on using nVidia surround.

As far as performance goes, a GTX470 wouldn't be a significant downgrade from what you have - infact it will feel smoother due to more consistant framerates (nothing to do with "microstutter) and decently cheap - I've seen them going at £140 recently.

EDIT: Not sure if there will be a "600" series tho not seen anything definite but got a feeling the naming convention is going to change.

Thanks for the input folks

My friend is gonna lend me one of his old Ati 4870's until I can decide on a new card.

As for running 3 displays, I forgot that due to the GTX295 being a multi GPU it was able to run 3 displays with the nVidia Surround ....as the 580 is a single GPU it would need to be SLi.
