Our air-con machine set us back £5500, the price of the gas has tripled in the past few years as have disposal costs and on top of that you now also need to fork out for extra training courses and licenses to even use it.
A full job including vac test and nitrogen pressure test with dye and UV check takes about 45mins tops but the cost of the materials and machines are the reason for the high costs.
There is also a new gas being introduced in the next few years that is even more expensive and less effective requiring larger and more expensive aircon components.

How did you find this out? Did you get a second opinion? I can't even begin to see how physically they could do that as the machine would have to fill it to an incredible pressure which I am loathe to believe itself would allow it to do.
Plus, I'm skeptical of anyone who signs up to a forum for their only posts to be about regassing their a/c ...

It can be very easy to overcharge a system, scales could be giving a false reading.
The pressure would not be high at all, unless you kept trying to fill system up with 30 kg and then the cart would shut down on high pressure. Probably around 20bar.
They did my mates Audi S3. They did the aircon recharge just fine - shame they ripped off his front splitter reversing it out (manager of the place). It was actually one of the spanner monkeys that came over to tell him what had happened, the manager wasn't going to bother :|
The system would run with a high head pressure and possibly trip the HP switch in certain circumstances and this would also hit your Fuel consumption and probably poor Cooling performance.
Chances of damaging the compressor can be 50:50.

Also guys it's best to use your air con for like 20 mins a month at least to keep the system going I find.

I use mine if the journey is more than 10 minutes long all year round. I am not sure if the system works the same as I have climate control so it heats as well as cools under the same button but my car doesn't smell, but probably means I need a refill sooner.
Just got back from the local garage, as a result of Kwack-Fit telling me that they couldn't regass my AC because there was leak somewhere in it and it couldn't be filled up with any gas at all.
Local garage did the tests with some sort of dye and UV light, and regassed the whole system in less than 1 hour. Ice cold air con now. £10 cheaper than what Kwack-Fit would have charged as well. Unbelieveable.

Kwik-Fit could have messed it up, or the other garage may of just filled it up despite it leaking.
If it was hooked up at Kwik-Fit and pressure tested and they found that it was not holding pressure then no, they couldn't fill it with any gas at all. It's an offence to vent off AC gas to the atmosphere, so if they did detect a leak they couldn't legally fill it knowing it would leak out over time.
The garage that did do the work may of found a small leak and decided to fill it anyways. Your air-com will work fine now but may start to fail over time if it is leaking very slightly.
Why bother turning it off at all?
