FAO Joshy, Toyota Soarers

That's cause i all but gave up 6-12 months ago, no point being constructive anymore, you either get jumped on by someone who's been in motors for all of 5 mins or you get told to stop being negative.

I still help the geniune people out as my post history attests to but not to the level i used to.

Motors has turned into a soap opera.

Ditto, the big threads are ones with arguments in - I usually read them though to see how a thread turns out the way it does.

Stuff that's car related seem to get overlooked.

I've read this thread about 10 times and still have no idea whats going on..

"LUL WUT" comes to mind

Anyway....

Anyone dismissing the Supra because of the interior is surely missing the point of the car? The Soarer doesn't exactly have a vastly better interior.

Even though they were originally grand tourers, i bet most people buying them today do so for the performance/tuneability, so the interior wouldn't be as big a concern as the shear power that can be made from 2jzs.

Although the soarers interior is sooooo much nicer.

Precisely.

If a comfrtable tourer is what you're after then surely you would not be looking at Supras and Soarers? A Volvo or something would be more suitable.

And just like Janesy B before him, so it came to pass that Joshy did decide upon an idol and aim to be just like him. Except unfortunately he only imitated the drinking bit and not the success bit.

On topic contribution to the thread: I vastly prefer the interior of the Soarer. It's got a similar centre console style to an old Jag actually (sort of) and the glovebox area looks far more modern.

PS I take it that Broadband photoshop thread was deleted then. Oh the hilarity of posting your face in a PS thread then getting annoyed when people start abusing it :p.

Lol why do all the best threads turn up while im on vacation :P

What exactly is so special about Supra's?

MKiii: Pop up headlights and digital dash
MKiv: The main character in the fast and the furious drove one

The turbos are completely different to the euro vs Jap supra ones you're probably thinking of. Stories where no restrictor ring on the J-Spec supra turbos will have them jumping to over 20psi and turbine wheels shearing clean off of shafts?

Don't want to argue with a fellow 1JZ nut but as im sure you know the Euro MKIV Supra CT12B's used steel wheels the JDM ones used ceramic and thus their weakness is the same as the CT12A's used in the 1JZ-GTE cars, as a general rule if you de-cat a 1JZ and fit a free flowing exhaust + intake then nine time out of ten you will be replacing the turbos within a couple of thousand miles. Most people say don't touch the cat unless you have the cash for hybrids or big single.

Its a beautiful looking car no doubt, and the engine (especially if you go for the GTE) is the stuff of legends in performance, reliability and upgradeability terms. That's why it holds a significant premium over the Soarer.

The 1JZ is actually just as tunable/reliable as the 2JZ, it has 500cc less but the head flows better hence why Frankenstein 1.5JZ's (1JZ head on a 2JZ block) are popular state side.

I am admitant that the Soarer has got the upper hand on the Supra interior wise.

Well it would, it was designed as a luxury cruiser whereas the Supra was a racing car for the road, Tiff Needell raved about its driver orientated interior
back in the day, I prefer the Soarer one though ^^

I don't think my insurance company quite understands what they've insured me on. I remember the girl from the call centre confirming the details 'So, It's a Jap Import Toyota Soarer, Twin Turbo, 2.5L, and you're an 18 year old male from South London and the preimum is £1800 (a guy at work my age paid £2800 for a 1.6 Ford Focus) . I swear I was expecting her to say, hang on, that ain't right :D.

You think that's funny I managed to get something along the line of "So, It's a Jap Import Toyota Supra, Twin Turbo, 2.5L, and you're a 27 year old disabled male from Wales, well your currently paying £680 a year on your Honda, so we'll be refunding you £30 for this year" :O

I really don't think that is why the Supra was special, considering the MKIV was released in 1993 and the film was released in 2001.

The MKIV Supra wasn't special just because it was featured in a film!

I was kidding, I doubt the popularity of the MKiii is really down to cool headlights either :P

Though you do have to admit that the cool image it attained from that film has been a big factor in its popularity in recent years, they still cost more than some equal condition comparable cars from that era such as the 300ZX, GTO and RX-7. Of course on the plus side they still cost a lot less than some other equal condition comparable cars from that era like the Chevrolet Corvette, Ferrari F355 and Honda NSX.

Agreed. MKIV Supras are expensive in comparison to equviliant cars of the time. You can get a RX7 Turbo for £4K which isn't much more than what you would pay for a non Turbo Supra.

Alright, completely different is maybe pushing it but I think you'll find that they are a little more different than the similar names would suggest.

I also have to disagree with you regarding the turbos going pop after the decat, exhaust and filter. There are two camps, one believe that the increase of boost and loss of back pressure wrecks the seals of the turbos others don't think it makes much of a difference. I ran my car with a filter, decat and exhaust for 8 months and no smoke. Actually come to think of it I'm sure it smoked more before the exhaust :D.

At the end of the day you're modifying a 20 year old car. You take your chances and expect that something may go wrong :)

Actually, the 2JZ does flow better, albeit it slightly. And probably the real reason why 1.5Js are so popular in the states is because a 1J bottom end is difficult and expensive to find where as they can pull 2JZGEs out of scrap yards all over the country for $50 :p.

But still, anyone who underates the 1JZ is a bit of a ****. The 2JZGTE has some of the best aftermarket support in the world so obviously the back catalogue of parts for the 1J might not look as impressive but as you say, they are just as tunable and as reliable as the 2J but manages to have a bit of a different character due to its shorter stroke making it an inherently revvy engine. It spins to 7500RPM from the factory!.
