falken 912 or toyo proxies?

Pretty much the only 2 reasonable value tyres in the 15, 50, 225 v rated arena really. i dont know much about these new falkens but i hear mixed things about the stiffness of the sidewall on the toyos... Anyone tried the alkens or have any thoughts on which is better for all year round driving?
 
I love the Falken 912's, especially in the wet, very underated tyre. BTW Proxes doesnt have an i in it :)

There are many different Proxes which ones are you thinking of? T1-R?

I was recently looking for some new tyres for the ur quattro which also takes 15/50/225, I had Pirelli Pzero's on there and had done for some time but found out they no longer make that size, there is a replacement coming but they don't have a date for release yet. So I set off to find something else as good or better but as far as normal road going tyres went, there wasn't really anything else so I decided to go down the road legal track day tyre route (yes I am actually going to run some track days as well as a trip to the Nurburgring). It was between the Toyo R888 and the Kumho Ecsta V700 (yes, Kumho.... I know no one here likes that word but their racing tyres are a completely different outfit to their road tyres and are actually used by a lot of the big players in racing) both V Rated, the Toyo R888 is nice but they are made in the same way as their road tyres just with a softer compound which makes the side walls too soft so I opted for the Kumho Ecsta V700... the Dry Grip is just amazing and the Wet Grip is almost just as good! A Friend of mine runs them on his 500bhp ur quattro and still manages to lift the inside rear wheel in turns on a soaking wet track!

The feedback and the wear is also very good.
The only thing with these tyres and all road legal track day tyres is snow but then again, unless you get proper winter tyres for that, it's going to be a bit hairy.

How do they behave on deep water at 60mph?
 
Well it coped with 170bhp through the front wheels in the wet on a 205 GTI with no problems, so maybe lab tests aren't everything?

They are tests outside, not in a lab. I'd trust them over the opinion of a random on the internet, thats for sure.

Fair enough, but they have no indication of how tested, whether subjective or measured, and what compared against (and on what vehicles) for the rating, so good luck with the numbers :)
 
That's what I thought. A track might be wet but you don't get big puddles on the side of the track like you get on the A-Roads.

No, you get huge puddles covering the entire 'track', which in some sections is specifically designed to replicate and thus test for aquaplaning at speed. It's properly saturated.

So answer my question, what do those numbers mean? What and how were they tested, against what and on what?

Sure they may not be as good as Conti blah blahs at twice the price, but what about against T1-R's the question asked?

I have used both of those so can answer the question asked subjectively as was asked.

My dad has had both on his mr2 and from my limited experience driving it both seemed to offer more than enough grip. The Falken's lasted longer though.
 
What tyre size do you need?

Get Vred Sportrac 3s. They scored very highly indeed in the recent ADAC test.
