Hi guys and girls,

I'm thinking of going sli 580 and I wanted to see if people have gone from one 580 to sli and did you have problems or not and what was the performance like with them both?, do regret doing it or not?, that sort of questions.

At the moment I am playing at 1920x1080 res but with in the next few months I will be getting another 2 montiors so I will be playing at 5760x1080 Res. Temps won't really be problem with as I will have both under water.

Both 580 will be 1.5gb versions. At the moment the most demanding game I am playing is crysis 2 and blops.

I know some of you will be thinking why it's abit of an overkill but I will rather. Have overkill now and not worry about upgrading for another few years.

Any help will be gr8,
Thanks

Well its not 580 SLI, but ran my 470s overclocked to almost (stock) 580 performance for awhile for benchmarking and performance is just great - absolutely no regrets but then this setup cost half what a 580 setup would.

For multi-screen gaming I've not gone above 5040x1050 but it was right on the edge VRAM wises in some of the heavier stuff so definitely would be hitting the limits at 5760x1080, not sure if the extra 256MB on the 580s is enough to take the pressure off or not.

You want sell your 1.5GB 580 and buy two 3GB 580's for gaming at 5760x1080

1.5GB is really not enough vram for a high res like 5760x1080

If you want game at these high resolutions then you really need to splash out the cash on the 3GB GPU's to run it..

You will play BLOPS fine at that res with the 1.5GB versions, but not if you start to up the AA - that's when your really gonna need the extra VRAM

It runs fine on my setup at 3600x1920 or 5760x1200

If I was in your position I would, as above, dump the 1.5GB version and go for the 3GB to give you the headroom and future proofing which may limit the 1.5GB versions at higher AA settings

If you're definitely getting those extra 2 monitors then you'll have to go SLI anyway. Surround doesn't work with one GPU.

thanks for the input guy's.

i've just brought my 580 1.5gb, so really i've shot my self in the foot then if i wanted to get 3 montior set up!..

Say if i dont go for the 3 montior set and just stick with my 24" montior at 1920x1080 res with sli 580, i know i would be fine but its really an overkill then?.

as for the psu i have a corsair hx 1000w psu coming.

Yes it is overkill for 1920x1080 but at least you can turn all the options on in any game without issue.

1.5GB versions are not bad cards, I personally can't justify the 3GB card price tag from the cheapest 1.5GB to the cheapest 3GB you are looking at £70 more which seems silly. You are only going to see the benifit at very high resolutions.

My advice would be if you go to 3 monitors would be to try the current cards first, I'd be suprised if they struggled especially coupled with an overclocked 2500k.

If he's happy with the slightly lower resolution then as you say, all games can be played to a very high standard. I'd be content to run two of those at my res, 1920x1200.

Slightly lower resolution? His monitor has a native of 1920x1080 so he is using the correct resolution.

lies.. you know as soon as those 28nm cards come out later in the year you'l be wanting to upgrade :D

Poorly written by me. I meant the lower resolution that he will be using for the mean time in comparison with what he will be using in the not too distant future. I'd say two high end cards like that in sli at 1920x1080 res would not be overkill (for me); as you say, he can turn on all the bells and whistles.

Ah yes with you now! :)

1.5GB vram is insufficient for 2560x1600, hence insufficient for your triple-screen setup as well. You could DSR the new 1.5GB card and wait for 28nm cards.

For that res it is not the lack of memory, but more about the lack of grunt that people should be worried about.

If you gonna stick with a single 1920x1080 res monitor, then your single GTX580 will still last you for a long time. However, as for upping the res, may it be going triple monitors or 2560 res, I would say just leave it until the new 28nm cards are out...and then decide what to do...may it be selling your GTX580 and getting two 28nm cards, or getting another GTX580 to SLI if the price drop. There's certainly no need to get another GTX580 to SLI right now, unless you really can't wait on upgrading the monitor.

So true I will w8 really and see what the 28nm.
I am playing crysis 2 with the dx11 and hi res pack on ultra setting with an fps of 40-70 and blops of 125+ fps so really no need at the mo.

I cant return the 580 as I brought it from the MM the other week for a really nice price :).

Thanks for the input guys :)..
