ok, so i tried it this morning @ 4.8GHz with 1.38vcore to see if it would post, and it doesnt. does this mean that 4.6GHz is the max this chip will do or should i try upping the vcore a bit (1.40v i believe is max)?

Have you touched anything else other than the vcore to get to 4.6? There's a few other settings that may help you get the extra out, but if 1.38 only gets you 4.6 then you've probably just got a very average chip. 1.4 is probably the max I'd put through it, although nobody really knows for sure what these chips can take yet.

the 4.6GHz i do using the auto oc and that only uses about 1.32v i tried the same with 4.8GHz and no post, so i manually set vcore to 1.35v, no post, so tried 1.36v, 1.37v and 1.38v and still no post :(

The auto OC function is actually pretty accurate with these chips, but you can usually get another couple of hundred Mhz out by doing things manually. The trade off is the amount of vcore used though unfortunately. If you can get 4.6 at 1.32, but need 1.4 for 3.8, then that's just not worth it imo and you'd be better sticking with 4.6, especially if using basic cooling like a freezer7.

There's plenty of sandybridge OC guides you can follow if you want to give it a bash though.

i am running at 4.4GHz not as the temps were crazy with 4.6GHz, i just wanted to see if it would post @ 4.8GHz so when i get my silver arrow i could go for it, i just dont feel happy with 1.4v (not sure it will even post with that) as it started with 1.35v being max safe, then it slowly went up to 1.38v, and now people are saying 1.4v is max for 24/7.

i would be happy with 4.6GHz when i get a cooler, that 1.3GHz more than stock so cant really complain. my last chip (X2 555) i could unlock to tri-core and overclock from 3.3GHz(i think thats stock) to 3.8GHz so that wasnt minimal in comparrison to the SB OC.
