With my advice, it fixes the problem. Thats what were trying to do here and it works.
The point they are trying to make is that your suggested fix, of changing the password, will only work if the cause of the problem is that someone (or something) knows his password and is using it to send the emails.
It is entirely possible that this sort of problem can occur because the emails are made to look like they are being sent from his address, but are in fact being sent from a completely different email account. In this case, it's just bad luck and there's not much you can do about it.
The advice really should have been that changing his password would do no harm, and might resolve the problem. Asking him to check his Sent folder, helps to confirm if the emails were sent from his account and would then confirm that his password had been compromised.
How do you know it's worked? Normally it doesn't due to the way it's sent...
OP have you checked to see if if there are messages in your sent folder!? It's the quickest way to check if changing your password will make any difference...
Also maybe see if the header shows you who originally sent the emails (ip address), probably will only show the reply ip though.
This has already been given
and OP has responded with the email that was sent to all of his contacts.
My wife has this crap 'sent' from her account. It isn't sent at all, it's just spoofed the sender, even if it has your contact list.
If her hotmail password had been compromised then I'm sure a lot of things would have happened alongside her account being compromised.
There is nothing wrong with hotmail OP.
