New York for a week.

What dates will you be there fox? I'm thinking around September time and they don't seem too bad.

Last weekend in September. Spending a few days there before heading to Key West down the East Coast.

Actually the nights I am looking at are a Thursday and Friday night, I wonder if I'm getting screwed on rate because they want the rooms to go to people staying Friday Saturday...

If you want to go and see the Satatue of Liberty then book ahead using the website - this will save you lots of hassle and time as you won't have to queue for a ticket and you know you don't have to worry about it selling out on the day you want to see it.

I stayed near macy's and was about 5-10min walk to times square.

Hotel was Raddison which is on the w32nd street

Might be worth checking hotels.com to see if you can get an discounted prices. I managed to get a room at the parker meridien for a slashed price by booking on short notice in summer.

What is the current tipping rate there now, and is there anyone who you are not supposed or obliged to tip?

try the Wellington Hotel

good location, and cheap. Rooms are not the greatest, but its clean.

and its where they filmed Borat :)

Tip the maid, the guy who takes your bags up, your waitress at meals, and bar staff. and if soemone hails you a cab

tip no one else.

I think you're right. I've been looking at Saturday to Saturday and found I can get the whole week for around £600. Not the best hotels but somewhere central and clean etc.

Have you tried seeing how much Wed/Thur prices are?

We stayed in the Grand Hyatt last time, next to Grand Central. Great location, but then most of hotels are in a good location in one way or another :)

Morning cookies and hot chocolate is a great way to start the day! :D

One piece of advice I will give you is that if you want to go up the Empire Estate building, do it at night! We went at about 10:30/11 and there were no q's at all. We went straight up, nice and quiet up there and the city looks amazing at night.

One reason I find Top of the Rock better is that you get a better view of Central Park.

Definitely head to China town for some food one day, lunch was best as at night it gets a bit crazy :) On food check the food court at Grand Central some really nice cakes to be had.

Subway to Brooklyn along Brooklyn Heights at dusk then walk back across the bridge at night, awesome city views.

Also check out the High Line its a bit out of the way but you can sit up and there and chill and take in some sites, I think they are expanding it at the minute.

I've stayed at the Radisson Martinique on Broadway twice now and been very happy with the standard.

If you get a nice day I'd recommend getting a Taxi to the Harlem end of Central Park and just walk back South to Midtown zig zagging across the park as you go.

It took a full day for us to get back to the other end and there was plenty to see on the way and best of all it was free.! (Apart from the cab ride).

Make sure you are out by nightfall though and I'd recommend not going into Harlem :D

Are there any area's best avoided, especially at night?

I like to explore but don't want to wonder off the 'path'
People are advised not to go in Central Park at night, but it's generally a very safe city. I was told that Brooklyn basically has no crime and that they either shut down their jail or are looking to; not sure if there's any truth in that though.

Brooklyn still has some dodgy areas. A friend of mine's mum is a teacher in a shadier part of it. Downtown Brooklyn is fine though, and during the day, I don't think there's anywhere in the city I wouldn't go.

Harlem's (stay out of the east side of Harlem if I were you) okay, although I felt 100% out of place in The Bronx if you were to stray more than a few hundred yards away from the zoo. Me being a white guy and The Bronx being a generally ethnic and poor area, I stood out like a sore thumb, and was in some cases deliberately made to feel like it.

we ended up renting an apartment for 3 nights, worked out to £60 each a night, pretty much on par with the cheapest hotels, I quite liked it but obviously you can't just phone room service for drink/food etc, plenty food/drink shops nearby tho
that was in east village, 11th and east i think
we walked from there to central park.times square, to the statten island ferry, hudson river etc but we did walk for milesssss!

A 7 day subway pass is $30 and will get you anywhere in the tri-state area. If you don't like walking, it's by far the cheapest way of getting around. :)
