I must be one of the last to die out using XP

your choice...when sites don't render or stuff doesn't work. I don't code/develop sites for anything under IE9 anymore and a lot of people are the same. I hope you don't do online banking with older browsers as you're asking for trouble. People like you stifle innovation and stop websites moving forward. XP is a security issue full stop and I would want to be secure whilst browsing. Your choice - I know what I'd do.

What a stupid thing to say.
I don't stop anyone from creating the most up to date website and if it doesn't work in my browser then it is only my fault.
I can just imagine writers saying "Bugger it, we're going to stop because dmpoole and his mates use an old Firefox".

Really? That wasn't my point though...the insecurity is the point, and even if you don't think it, it's true you do influence things. I have my opinions, as do you, we both believe in them (at least I hope we do) and by having differing opinions we have a discussion. Therefore, I believe that people like you are stifling innovation. Hopefully, we don't agree 100% of the time and that's why I post on here to listen to your side of the story...
I wasn't having a go at you personally, and tbh I don't mind if you use XP just as long as you realise what a bad show it makes of security, but in my opinion, you'd be a bit naive to stay on XP when you could be using a more secure and featured OS. Sure it's probably faster, and if that's what floats your boat then so be it. I apologise if I came across a bit gung-ho, it's not meant to be like that...

700+ machines in my company and all but 3 are running WinXP Pro.

Our communications director simply cannot secure the funding to roll out W7 as its not just the cost of the software, its also:

> about half the machines would have to be replaced
> we use lotus notes for e-mail which would need upgrading
> our warehouse management system wont run in anything but IE7
> theres a shed load of printers that dont have W7 drivers

Huge investment needed for medium sized firm only just managing to break even currently.

Come to think of it, I dont actually know of a company that has migrated to W7 fully yet.

errr....what?

Lots of companies are still on XP :). IIRC we're part way through the XP -> Win7 transition.

We have 3500 PC's at our Trust all stopping the developement of websites.

WTF did you do to it dmpoole!

Nothing at all.
A couple of years ago I bought an AMD Quad system and put XP on with no probs.
I then realised I must be missing out so put Win 7 on and suffered nothing but problems.
A couple of months ago after trying everything (other threads on here) I decided to go back to XP with trouble free computing.
Don't get me wrong, if I have a new system at the end of the year Win 7 (or 8) will go on.
I've built/upgraded at least 25 systems in that time and all had Win 7 on with no probs - it's just my system doesn't like it.

What the hell are people talking about here
Who uses Internet exploder for anything other than downloading firefox or suchlike ! come widespread html 5 everything will support it.

An operating system should be a minimal interface between hardware and program and apps, Vista/win7 (same thing) is bloated and not much more secure than any windows OS in comparison to Unix superuser hierarchy !
All stupid things like user access control do is annoy power users.

I know very few who has purchased a new vista-Win7 PC that go deeper than start-internet who prefer Win 7....sure they think its marvellous after vista.

Primarily the biggest mistake MS made was not offering a true classic no crap version the underlying kernel is good. they just have to realize win 7 offers very little over what people already have...except expense and heartache if your a company running along nicely on XP

XP will be around long after win 7 is forgotten and win 8 is going to be ROFL for businesses :D

My work, power station, still runs on XP. Mainly due to the delay in driver and software support from other vendors. We still rollback to XP from vista installs or just format them and start again depending on how the machines arrive

Oh and we still have 2000 and NT aswell as os2 warp providing power to the people!

I had to go back to XP for a while a couple of months ago. Hated it. It's not until you use Windows 7 for a few months that you realise how many little tweaks there are that really make actually using it a lot more pleasant and speedy.

personally speaking I'd never go back to XP now...Win 7 has been flawless for me on about 30 setups and is so much nicer to use on a day to day basis...

Same however I've Win7 x64 and Ubuntu in a dual boot system which works flawlessly,my old XP PC got replaced by Ubuntu years ago, could never go back to XP now.

I used it for over a year and on my kid's lives I can't see any major differences in speed or useability.
In fact I installed my old programs to make it more usable.
I also use mine for writing music with Sonar Production, I use Corel Video for film editing so I'm not a light user either.
I have no idea about games and such like.

Cant blame Microsoft for the problems with Win 7. Blame the devs who cant be bothered to write their software/drivers properly or blame the user.

Out of curiosity what are the many little tweaks you missed from win 7 ?
