After reviewing and thinking about an up coming garage conversion and what amp/speakers etc to go with, I decided it was time to discuss the dreaded budget constraints with the other half.

The budget was ok-ish, however she was adamant that the speakers are not to be "hung on the wall" or "dead obvious"

So it looks like I going down the route of in wall speakers.

Looking for a 5.1 surround probably from an Onkyo 609 or alike amp.

A quick look around and some reading leads me towards the Monitor Audio speakers which look like a winner in terms of pleasing the wife and within budget.

Is there any need to "mix" different models for front & rear or is it a case of simply getting 5 of the same speaker - say the MA W280's. Or Monitor Audio Controlled Performance In Wall Bronze Speaker - CPW-BR(plus a seperate sub which is another discussion)

Any help/advise or pointers is much appreciated.:D

It's best is all speakers match, the front 3 matching is the most important. I run Monitor Audio RX at the front and BX rears without any complaints. I also run these from the Onkyo 609 and can confirm its a good match for MA and sounds fantastic.

Will you be getting a sub too? Some of these look like coffee tables so might have the WAF.

Look into Focal Domes. While I doubt you'll be able to pick up a set new for £1000, at least with the sub, you could probably get them used for about that, or without the sub (I wouldn't get the sub anyway, much better options available). They are however very wife friendly as they come in various colour options and are quite small.

cheers for that - again i think they will fall foul of the "sticking out the wall" situation that the wife has said is a no go. will confirm however!

I think so. I have the Victoria Evo ones but got them ex dem from a shop in Brighton but they stopped doing them.

Have u looked at cube speakers which are normally about 8-9cm square and can be mounted celling height pointing to your seating area. Or do the really have to be non visible?

Small speaker suggestions:

I have heard the hts 101 pack and they sound cracking. I'm planning on going for an upgraded sub, either the BK gemini II, BK xls200 or the wharf. SW150.

I would say only the Q's would be 'dead obvious' all the others are round 14cm high, 10cm wide and 12cm deep.

Just a few suggestions :D I would also stick with the 609 u mentioned.
