MSI UEFI heavily criticised in reviews. Updates coming? what do you think?

MSI's 'Click BIOS' has been slated in several reviews, possibly the worst is this on HardOCP (reviewer calls it the worst he's seen in 16 years) but the editorial also says that MSI have promised to improve the interface with updates. Anyone know if they're being true to their word? or better yet have confirmation of when an improved UEFI interface will be available for MSI boards?

the layout is terrible
Everything you can actually click on requires a double click. It’s really, really annoying.
many of the dialog boxes will partly disappear when you do click in them
You can’t hold the arrow keys and scroll through menus.

Dan is dead on with his thoughts about the BIOS. All the double clicking and menu FUBARs can drive you nuts. It is just hard to work with. Once you get beyond having to tweak the BIOS any more, you are looking at what is a great piece of hardware, belittled by terrible software.

Having not used one I cant comment on the usability.
However "games" in a BIOS just screams to me stay away.
Im sure its perfectly fine otherwise but just that one menu options puts me right off.

MSI, If you want to be taken seriously you REALY need to get shot of that.

I can see what critical views are based on, but it is not that bad.
It will take you some time to get used to it, but it does work.

It definitely needs to be worked on, and I am sure it will be, its early days.....
Luckily, after I do my o`clocking I spend most of the time actually using my PC, so bios really isn't a deal breaker for me.

Gotta say I'm a little bemused by UEFI, granted its something we should be working towards for future usage as we are starting to run into the limitations of the current architecture, but conventional style BIOS does everything I want, its easy to find stuff, etc. makes me laugh at how worked up some people get about boards that don't have UEFI yet.

I have to agree with Rroff - although i'm impressed with the MSI P67A range of motherboards I, personally, hate the 'Mickey Mouse' UEFI.

A side from the gaudy, unnecessarily convoluted layout the mouse function is next to useless. I imagine that numerous 'new users/builders' will have entered erroneous inputs, without realising it, if they’ve used the mouse, instead of keys, as their sole input device when making changes in the BIOS.

I wish MSI had followed Gigabytes approach and still used the old style layout – it's so much faster and simpler to navigate/use.

They seemed to have made things overcomplicated in their bid to ‘try’ and make a more user friendly GUI – they've failed thus far (for me).

This is true, however there are some features that some users now see as must have e.g. booting from large HDDs. I'm not too fussed about that, and a mouse interface for adjusting settings isn't vital.

I'm really hoping that UEFI will put an end to the non-detection of USB mouse and keyboard during boot. It doesn't happen too often, but I find it enough of a nuisance that I would be very happy to pay a few pounds extra for a proper UEFI interface. It's just a pity that MSI version appears to be terrible.

on the other hand, reviewers are raving about Asus' implementation of UEFI and praising it for being well organised and very easy to use.

I haven't played with the ASUS version as i've only built using MSI and Gigabyte boards - so i can't pass judgement.

But i will concede that a better designed and implemented UEFI/GUI would have it's advantages - especially for the uninitiated/new builders.

No board is perfect though, and while Asus may have good UEFI they have made some other gaffs that detract somewhat from their hardware e.g. mATX - CPU socket v. close to PCIe, onboard graphics limited to 1920x1200, Turbo scaling doesn't work correctly (always boosts to max multiplier regardless of demand.) Really I want either: Gigabyte to implement a proper UEFI for their Z68, or MSI to make theirs a bit more user friendly (also need to confirm the HDMI 1.4 resolution support question) However that Maximus GENE-Z does look very nice despite not having exactly the features I was hoping for

Yush, the UEFI on my Sabertooth 990FX is bloody amazing as well. And it's version 1.0. Will be interesting to see what they do with it in the future. It's just handy in that, if you prefer, you can navigate it just like you would a normal BIOS. Its layout is exactly the same with options vertically and tabs horizontally. It's just prettier and with more monitoring and automatic setup features.

If you look at the new Z68A-GD80 bios shots you can see they have revamed the gui and it now looks just like the asus gui. Also they have a windows bios tool which mirrors the bios gui.

Have to say the reversed mouse movement on the GD65 B3 BIOS is annoying. I preseume there is an update that fixes this? Not looked yet but there had better be! Have to agree it doesn't seem any better than an old style BIOS and is possibly harder to use...

Yeah I had the same issue with my board and my gaming mouse (razer deathadder) Latest BIOS fixed it for me.
